Delay paying £190 car tax on EV until April 2026 (action needed before the end of March 2025)

I think that it’s inevitable that this will be introduced sooner rather than later - there’s a huge hole developing in revenue lost through road fund licence that needs plugging.
Given the current government’s comments on the dire state of finances that they apparently inherited, I would say very soon.
The main area that could delay it is appetite for EV sales.

They will get revenue from car tax, it is coming in April 25, unless like a few others you retaxed in March 24.
The main concern is the loss of revenue from fuel sales, more EV, less fuel purchased, less tax income.
Bet the think tanks are already looking at the Smart Home EV charger and how they can get 20% vat

If you re-tax up until March '25 you'll be good for the next 12 months, i.e March '26 first tax payment ( I believe...and hope ?).

And there's all that lost banned smoking tax revenue too!

Personally pay per mile would be great for me seeing as I only do 2.5-3k miles per annum.
But I do hope they don't apply it to goods vehicles or everything will go up in price.

I think it's interesting how they are on about using gadgets to record mileage. Surely the obvious solution ( for fossil fuels) is to integrate it into the cost of the fuel. The more you use, the more you pay. The higher your mileage, the more you pay.
Some similar solution for EV. Incorporate it into the fuel cost.... or am I missing something ( again)

It's difficult to incorporate it into home charging unless everybody had a charger that could separate EV charging from home utility use.

Pay monthly in arrears from a yearly update of mileage. 3 year old from MOT, so only 2 manual inputs, at service?
Or, encourage new car purchases by having the first two years free and then the third year pay an estimated amount which is corrected by the MoT mileage from then on. No need for any gadgets or privacy issues.

Regards electric, I think it may have been possibly an Octopus blog talking about quantum tagging ( I dunno ? ) electrons. This would enable ( apparently) every electrons source and destination to be identified.... Big brother got nuttin' on us ?.
- Cap'n Vague talking about "something like that"

It really wouldn’t be good for you. They may not tax the goods vehicles but they will tax the driver getting to work. The people in the warehouses and factories - who will need higher wages to pay the taxes ergo it will get you.

Because they need a fuel they can check - remember red diesel ? There would be no way of dipping the tank to know if you had paid tax on it - electrons from solar panels via a dumb charger for example. I often think this is why LPG never took off in the UK - it’s the same as heating gas and they have no way of dipping the tanks.

Hi, in April 2025, EV cars switch from £0 per year car tax to £190. If your car is registered in March, you'll avoid paying it next year. But if registered in April, May or after, you just miss the cut-off and will pay £190 on renewal next year.

This method delays it for a year to March 2026. You pay £0 now, £0 in March 2025 then £190 in March 2026. The £190 payment starts on 1 April 2025.

I went to the "tax your car" government website, and re-taxed mine. You need the V5C registration document 11 digit code, I clicked on "I don't have a tax renewal letter" and agreed "I know I'm taxing it before I have to". But I re-taxed it early, in March instead of June, at a cost of £0.

It took a couple of days to update, but checking on my car's tax status, it has now switched renewal from 1 June 2024 to 1 March 2025, so therefore I avoid paying £190 for a year.

It took 5 mins, and I recommend doing it, there's no reason for everyone whose tax (currently £0) is due after April in 're-taxing' now for £0 and delaying the payment of £190 for a year. But it HAS to be done in March, ie now. The car tax web site warns you you will be paying twice by taxing early - but you just pay £0.00 twice!

I got this off an MG facebook group where they're all doing it, i tried it and it worked. You don't need to SORN the car for a day which some people thought.

So if I'm not due till May '25

So, I'm just checking as it's now September 24, and my renewal is due May '25. I need to 'pay' my road tax 'manually' in March '25 so as to adjust the renewal date and defer my cash payment to March '26.

That's how I understand it and what I'm planning on doing. Mine is due 1 March anyway but should see me through to 1 March '26 @ £0.

I think you missed the boat on that one. You should have done it March this year as the payments started in April this year.

Just read the gov.uk site and am somewhat confused ( again) .
My car, registered 01 March'24 is showing as taxed, which I'm sure was a £0 affair. The instructions say it started in 2024 ( £190) , but will commence in 2025, then refers to it being April 1 '25, in fact main intro statement says from 1 April '25.
Has anyone had to tax theirs yet ? Real money?

I think doing it March this year was just to line it up ready for next year. It is still £0 to do it now.
I did it for my previous car but have since bought another and will 'tax' it in March next year.
