Delay paying £190 car tax on EV until April 2026 (action needed before the end of March 2025)

If you taxed in March '24 (like I did - it was previously taxed from 01-Nov-23 but I retaxed early in March '24) then you'll retax in March '25 at £0.

If your tax is due on or after 01-Apr-25 then you can also retax early* in March '25 and get £0 for the following 12 months. Yes you might be giving up some taxed period, but that taxation was £0 anyway so nothing lost. :)

If you don't try to retax early in March '25 then you'll 100% be liable for whatever is the taxation rate from 01-Apr-25 and thereafter.

Bottom line - all this method is doing is delaying when you become liable for the standard taxation rate. :)

* Unless the Gov close this loophole.

Hi, in April 2025, EV cars switch from £0 per year car tax to £190. If your car is registered in March, you'll avoid paying it next year. But if registered in April, May or after, you just miss the cut-off and will pay £190 on renewal next year.

This method delays it for a year to March 2026. You pay £0 now, £0 in March 2025 then £190 in March 2026. The £190 payment starts on 1 April 2025.

I went to the "tax your car" government website, and re-taxed mine. You need the V5C registration document 11 digit code, I clicked on "I don't have a tax renewal letter" and agreed "I know I'm taxing it before I have to". But I re-taxed it early, in March instead of June, at a cost of £0.

It took a couple of days to update, but checking on my car's tax status, it has now switched renewal from 1 June 2024 to 1 March 2025, so therefore I avoid paying £190 for a year.

It took 5 mins, and I recommend doing it, there's no reason for everyone whose tax (currently £0) is due after April in 're-taxing' now for £0 and delaying the payment of £190 for a year. But it HAS to be done in March, ie now. The car tax web site warns you you will be paying twice by taxing early - but you just pay £0.00 twice!

I got this off an MG facebook group where they're all doing it, i tried it and it worked. You don't need to SORN the car for a day which some people thought.

Hi Martin,
Only just joined and your post looked like something really interesting. As we are now September 2024 can we do this re-registration for tax at any time before March 2025 and get 12 months from date of doing it for £0?

Well not exactly at any time ... best to do it in March (?) 2025 so the tax is effective from 01-Mar-25. If you do it, say, in December 2024 then the tax will become effective from 01-Dec-24 and will become next due on 01-Dec-25. So to maximise the delay before having to actually pay £££ retax effective from 01-Mar-25. :)

Aye but you could tax it for £0 any time up to March 25 and then again from then again for £0 to cover you until March 26.
At least that’s my understanding?

Yes. (before April 2025)

I did it the long winded way, sorned it then went round to the post office around the corner and retaxed it, as I didn't know you could retax/renew it when it was still taxed.
Does this “long route” work without objection from DVLA? I’ve a Macan EV due late Sept or Oct 24 and ideally want to get this done in March 25 to carry forward to March 26 - any thoughts guys?

.. as long as the loophole isn't closed between now and then, then it should still work.

Why bother with the long route. 2 mins max online?

If the rumours in the press are true we'll all be paying per mile before we benefit from taxing our EVs early.
I always thought paying per mile should be absorbed by fuel cost. The more fuel you use, the more ( more) tax you pay. ( We'll talk about electric as a fuel later ?)

VED letter has just arrived from DVLA and guess what, we’re all going to be paying road tax on our EV’s from next year. £190 minimum currently, more if you’ve paid a over £40k for you car!!!!

I thought they weren’t allowed to alter taxation on pre existing cars or am I just being naive???

??????

@TheRoadrunner, I'm just wondering where you've been for the past 18 months, and I've merged your post into the relevant thread.

There is also a thread about the "expensive car tax".

Will this trick work if you do it in March 2025?
