Disable speed camera warnings

More on France...
I'm now in Normandy, and the SatNav has flagged up a speed camera on a particular stretch of road - despite me switching off (I think) the detector. It doesn't appear on Google.
Another question - how do I flip from miles to kilometres on the speedo?
Detector? Unless you have bought a 3rd party unit, the vehicle doesn't have a speed camera 'detector' only access to a database of cameras.

Remember Google is not the be all and end all and does not necessarily have an accurate speed camera database.

The post saying speed camera databases are legal in France is wrong. You can have a system that provides a general notification of a section of road that is marked as a ‘danger zone’ but this can cover a large area. Any device that has the actual location of a speed camera is illegal. As anyone who has been stopped before, the French police are not sympathetic.

the following is taken from the AA website;

Speed camera detectors in France - know the law | The AA

What does the French law say?

French laws ban drivers from carrying devices that can detect speed cameras. This covers:

  • Radar and laser detectors, which pick up the signal from mobile speed cameras
  • GPS systems which show fixed speed cameras that exist on a database
Banned GPS systems can include sat navs and other navigation devices that show you where fixed speed cameras are.

What are the penalties?

If you're caught with one of the banned devices, you could be penalised. Penalties can include:

  • Fines of up to €1,500
  • Confiscation of the device
  • The vehicle being confiscated
Penalties can be issued if you're using the device or if you simply have it in the car, even if it's switched off.

Google maps does not hold speed camera data in its Maps because of the French law making it illegal

So anyone in France with built in sat nav will have there car confiscated?as It has the ability to show points of interest ie speed cameras
But then there high way code says
  • Under articles L413-2 and R413-15 of the French ‘Code de la Route’ (highway code), it is strictly forbidden to have radar speed camera detectors in cars in France, regardless of whether or not they are in use.
  • Penalties can include fines of up to €3,000, confiscation of the device and of the vehicle.
  • This legislation does not apply to satellite navigation systems (SatNav or GPS). These can tell motorists only the location of fixed speed cameras, data which is already in the public domain

Legally yes they can. The French police are very tight on driving offences, particularly non French citizens. Don’t ever underestimate how the police treat foreign motorists.

They have the power to issue immediate driving bans for two weeks which covers the majority of holiday motorists.

Always make sure someone else with you is insured to drive your car, and take evidence of this with you.

Google do not provide speed camera locations in their mapping data for France and Tom Tom provide areas of danger but they cover a wide area to stop you slowing down for a specific camera and then speeding up again

Also remember you have to have yellow jackets for each person in the car, a warning triangle and breathalyser kit. Each one carries a £90 euro fine. If you get stopped you are likely to be checked for these items as well so don’t put them under your luggage in the boot!

Finally if you don’t have sufficient cash to pay the fines, the police will take you to a cash point machine which is very nice of them.
