DIY system update?

Hi. I'm having some android auto issues. I'd also like to update my cars inbuilt sat nav (due to android auto issues!). I'm told I can download a software update and put it on a flash drive, then upload it to the car via the usb. I feel like I've searched the entire internet and can't find anything useful on the subject except to take it to a garage. Has anyone done a software update themselves?
