EV opposition in the media is ramping up

I haven't asked them because I don't really need anything from them. I have my granny charger and I only use the public charger to speed things up a bit, if I feel like it. It just crossed my mind, when we had all that sunshine in June, I wonder if they have any spare sunlight going begging. (The other couple in the street who have a wall box spontaneously offered me the use of it if I was ever in need, but they don't have solar and since the granny charger could keep pace with my motoring needs even without the public charger, I probably won't need to ask.)
If you use a neighbors wallbox to charge your ev, how would you calculate the electricity used to pay them for it ??

Most of the wallbox chargers apps will tell you how much charge has been put into the car and they should know how much their electricity is per kWh

That could lead to disagreements, especially if they have a battery... They would be better off having their own wallbox charger.

What difference does having a battery make regarding how much KWh the car has taken as a charge?
Well, using your battery to charge their car, sure you could charge them at the KW rate but they might argue its free power from the battery.
I wouldn't be letting anyone do it as we use all of our battery up for the house and car.

If they have solar and a battery it has cost them thousands to get free power so why shouldn't they charge the same rate as their supplier no matter of where the electricity has come from. Agree a unit price first and if you don't like it don't use their wall charger.

Well that is a disagreement / argument that would never happen upon prior discussion.

I have solar and battery installation and between the two and Octopus night time Tarif, my current running costs are around 1 pence a mile. (Average 1100 miles per month).

If someone wanted to use my charger I would charge the standare price per KWh from the grid, and if they didn’t agree, don’t plug and See ya laters! :)

No skin off my nose if they are on my drive or not, and would still be a whole lot cheaper and more convenient than public charging.

You are free to charge what you like. As has been said, agree the unit price beforehand and job done.

We went to the Weston super Mare Beer and Cider festival yesterday and we met one of my son's friends. The conversation went from Marvel Comic films, to Iron Man, Tony Stark, to him being based on Elon Musk, and then electric cars. My son's friend is a confirmed petrol head and literally verbatim quoted every EV myth we all know and hate as fact.

Challenge accepted, I was able to shoot down every myth he presented, from all the battery myths, to needing to be able to charge at home (I asked him where he filled up his fossil fuelled car).

We did agree that EV's are more expensive than ICE cars (I added the caveat "at the moment"), and that the charging infrastucture needs to improve.

Well, it hasn't happened, so I don't know what arrangement we'd come to. We're a cul-de-sac of only ten houses and everyone gets on very well. The couple at no. 6 have a dog and cats, and I've looked at injuries and apparent illness for them several times and given them advice as to whether it was something the vet needed to see, and if so, how urgently. (I'm a retired vet.) When they heard I was getting an electric car, and I said I was in two minds about getting a wall box because I thought the granny lead would keep up with my requirements, they immediately said "if you need to, you can use our wall box." I think this is unlikely to happen because there is a public charger five minutes walk away. If would need the coincidence of me doing a lot of driving for some reason and the village charger being out of action before I'd need to ask. Of course, if I did ask, I'd offer to pay for the electricity and accept whatever estimate they put on that. They're not going to bilk me!

The other wall box in the street is attached to a serious solar panel array at one end and a big fancy Tesla at the other. It crossed my mind only vaguely that they might have some free energy going spare in June when it was wall to wall sunshine for about 18 hours a day, but nothing was offered. They may be storing it in a home battery and using every KWh for growing cannabis plants for all I know!

Jeremy Clarkson, for pity's sake! You might have warned us.

There wasa electric car fire here a month ago. That started everyone off how dangerous they were again. The truth was the front tyre caught on fire which spread to the rest of the car.
How does a front tyre catch fire? Break system maybe?

Or arson by a Sun / Daily Fail reader perhaps ?

Here is a very recent house fire in North Wales that has been suggested, was caused by charging an electric scooter ? outside of the front door.
The scooter started a fire which tragically gutted the whole house in the process.
In the picture I did spot an EV wall box on the wall of the property and thought, he we go again !.
Sky news grabbed this story.
Interesting to note that I see no provision for an external three pin external socket outlet on the outside of the property ?.
The scooter was put on charge and then the family left for about 30 minutes, I have now been later informed.
Question :- How is the lead supplying the power to the charger reaching the scooter, I ask myself ?.
Trapped under the front door when it was closed and locked by any small chance ???.

I can think of a number of things. : brakes heting up, wheelbearings getting dry and hot, Electrical system short and a lot of other things besides the car battery starting the fire. In the news an electric scooter on fire. Some of these cheap things might not have a BMS on them.. Car batteries have a BMS and cooling built into them, I also have a tesla powerwall2 solar battery under my house. I have seen inside it and it has a radiator and cooling system built in..

An electrical system short would surely blow a fuse first?in any case, I get your point ?

If this is the story I'm thinking of, they didn't have house insurance.
Who can afford an ebike but not house insurance?
