I have a 2023 MG ZS EV and I have been trying to upgrade to 2022 maps but for the life of me, I am not able to create a fingerprint.

I have tried 3 USB's with 16GB using FAT32, exFAT and NTFS without any joy.

01 Home Page.JPG

This is the home screen and if I drag this screen to the left I get the screen below

02 Scroll Right.JPG

I select Settings and then scroll down to System
03 Scroll Down.JPG

I then select Map Update

04 Map Update.JPG

Followed by the Instruction Screen

05 Instruction 1&2.JPG

Pressing OK opens the screen that says the USB does not contain any updates which is correct.

06 No Files.JPG

Inserting one of the USB's, I get a pop up saying the USB has been inserted.
07 Inserted USB.JPG

When I first insert the USB, it flashes a LED to indicate that it is being accessed so the Infotainment unit has seen the stick.

Each time I insert another different format USB, I have rebooted the head unit and each USB has flashed the LED as it was accessed.

When I go back to my W11 PC, I get the following results

FAT32 show LOSTDIR and System Volume Information folder, both are empty

ExFAT only has the System Volume Information folder.

NTFS is completely empty

One attempt yesterday did manage to create these folder but they were all empty - K:\Android\data\com.telenav.app.arp\files

I have installed Naviextra Toolbox on my W11 PC but because I don't have the head unit files on the USB stick, it will not go past the Welcome screen.

What am I doing wrong?. I have been using Naviextra aboyt 10 years ago when I updated the maps in my D-Max fitted with a Clarion head unit but it had the maps on a SD card which I plugged into my PC, no problems but the MGTouch is about to get a fist through the main screen.

Appreciate any feedback.

Bob

You need to go to the MG website. MG maps are not from Naviextra´s.
This is the MG website page where you will find the map updates. you will need to insert your Vin Number then follow the instructions.

Roldorf, that might work for Europe but I am in Australia:oops:

Peterseddon, if I wanted to use Google I would not have ask the question. Sometimes it is better to use what is supplied considering I get 5 years free maps.

Thanks to both of you for taking the time to reply but not the answers I was after.

They promise 5 years of updates, but they don't state how often these maps will be released.

Right now, at least here in Europe, the latest map is Q4 2023 (Dated November 1. 2023), which makes the maps more than a year old and not word on, when (If ever) they will release new map updates.

I upgraded to 2023 maps, mostly as a backup to Android Auto / Google maps, but never actually used them to date.

MG also said the car could get OTA upgrades for the infotainment, but to date they have not sent even one OTA upgrade so any updates they promise should not be expected to ever materialise and if they do, it might take some time.

Thanks hmadsen, my old D-Max used a similar system with maps supplied by Naviextra but I only got one free update and when I finally upgraded it I found the maps were over 12 months old.

I sent an email to MG Australia and received the following reply/instruction
Updating Procedure:

1. Insert a blank USB disk into the head unit/vehicle USB.

2. Go To Settings/system and click on the “update navigation” button.

3. Wait for the process to finish.

4. Download and install Toolbox 4 from the link below – on to your PC.

Naviextras.com - Map updates for your navigation device and more...

5. Insert the USB disk to the pc and launch toolbox 4.

6. Sign in or create an account.

Once you create and account and sign in, you will need to select the Brand (MG), then select the correct vehicle model and market.

7. Download the latest map version and wait for the process to finish. - currently the user interface for Toolbox 4 is different from the ones presented in the guide, the map provider is working on this. NOTE: there is a charge for map updates from Naviextras.

8. Insert the USB disk to the headunit again.

9. Go To Settings/system and click on the “update navigation” button.

10. Wait for the process to finish (approx. 5-15 minutes to finish).

11. Start the navigation software.

12. Go to About menu /Contents/maps where the version of freshly updated map data can be checked.

With regards to step 3, how long do you need to wait for the USB to be updated?

Downloading and update in the car takes quite some time due to large file size. I updated mine last year (software was already 6 months old), had to unzip and, from memory, one of the files was either missing or extra so had to add/remove it from the unzip folder for the car to "get the message" from USB stick and start uploading ... Uploading it to the car took quite some time, again, can't remember whether it was around 1 hour or so ...? And wondering if I was going to brick it up ... For me, I also always use Google maps

After sending some of the photos above, MG Australia have come back with the following reply

Thank you for providing a step-by-step of what you attempted to complete in your vehicle for the maps update.

We have discussed this further with our Technical Department for assistance.

Your vehicle (and all of our newer models) no longer supports downloaded map updates; this is for older model MGs. I do apologise that you went to that effort.

We have received confirmation that the maps update occurs at a Service Centre, the Team raises the request with our Technical Department who then supplies the update directly to the Dealership.

My ZS EV was built in March 2023 so can anyone here confirm one way or the other that they are correct.

I need to have the first 3,000 complimentary service done so will also get them to look at updating the maps plus any other updates that are needed.

Mine is 2022 and I downloaded and updated maps last year in June I think. This is in England. Maybe the contract with third party providing maps for Australia ended or different rules apply...

Thanks Fred, mine is a 23 model so I am hoping someone with a 2023 or newer.

Sygic is starting to sound good but just peeved that the nav units in cars are basically very poor, they should be better and have free maps during the warranty period, mine being 10 years.

I have never ever seen a decent satnav in any of the cars I drove - they are either paid for (rip-off) or completely out of date that it's safer to drive without one and follow traffic signs ... not to mention they all look like they are from 20 years ago ...
MG one (in Europe) is at least free for 5 years from the date of purchase and half-decent but if you live in any urbanised area, where traffic, roadworks and road layout change fairly often, you really need a live updates satnav like Google or Waze ... I used MG satnav few times and got stuck in roadworks traffic for ages. Since then, not bothering with it although it's there as an emergency backup ...

My car is November 2023 and I have downloaded and installed the latest map updates. Having said that these are the Maps for Europe including the UK, so maybe a totally different system for Australia.
I had Naviextras on my previous car and I have to admit the update system was totally crap, you were allowed one update then you had to pay and it wasn`t cheap. It was a nice car but six years without an update (didn't like being ripped off) navi was not very reliable.

Did you try to go to the MG website and input your VIN, should show you manuals and map updates for your vehicle.

I bet the map files are different for Europe and Australia, but i would be quite surprised if there were no updates at all.

Unless they do it differently in Australia you should forget all of that nonsense about naviextra, that's only for the 1. gen cars and judging by the images of your infotainment screen, you have the 2.gen

This is the site i am told to go to go to when i visit the Danish site.

This is the EU site, i would imagine they might only have EU maps, but on the other hand, if you enter your VIN it should know your region and maybe it will show you the maps for Australia.

Just make sure you get maps that are for Australia, it's no good using maps from that site, if you end up with European maps and no AUS maps :)

I can sort of understand your desire to use the built in maps that should be provided free by MG for the period indicated but to be totally frank, I see zero value in them. As others have said they are woefully out of date and provide such little information they are less than useless. Given the apple and Android compatibility using mapping apps that provide current maps, use live data to show congested roads and offer rerouting, real time roadwork info, ability to route plan for charging networks etc, speed camera locations to name a few of the features. None of these are available using the MG (most car brands for that matter) inbuilt map systems.

Hard agree.

It sort of made sense when I had the Hyundai as although the data wasn’t quite as good as Google, the real time charger availability together with the way it integrated to the car’s state of charge and its ability to dynamically find you a charger en route made it worth it.

The MG mapping and Nav software is just worse so much in every way that it really isn’t worth bothering with.

While i do agree, i tend to be a bit on the cautious side, i update the maps because i see them as a backup option, if My Phone dies for example.

I also have an offline navigation app on my Phone, in case something happens and my Phone loses connection to the internet, its great with the always up to date features of google maps and other like Kit but lose connection to the internet and they become all but useless.

The zs ev navigation is not good but if its all you have its far better than nothing...even if you only use it once a year...

I also always carry Cash in case the electronic payment systems fail.....I know this might sound quite normal to a lot of people but in Denmark Cash is more or less never used...99,9% of all payment are electronic and almost no one (beside old people) carry any Cash...

Thanks hmadsen, tried that site and downloaded the map zip file but was still not able to load it into the head unit
