Hi Everyone, long time lurker, first time posting.

So I went to our local dealer this morning for your pre-booked test drive of the new long range MG5. We'd arranged to have it for a couple of hours on our own so that we both could drive it and we could get it home to see if we can get bicycles in the back easily enough.

We arrived on time but he was dealing with another couple, no problem, we were allocated to another sales guy but of course he knew nothing about our previous discussions and deals etc.
So after giving him all our details over again, explaining what car we were interested in and what accessories we wanted, he took copies of our licenses and we went out to look at the car.

But this wasn't the demo car, this was the sales managers car and it was a bit of a pig sty inside, at least it was a long range version but no idea how he'd got it so messy considering it only arrived last week!
Then our sales guy get in the back and says off you go. I explained we wanted totryt he car on our own and would be back in an hour or so as agreed.

Sadly nobody had told him this either so he hadn't arranged the insurance for that and it turns out the car only had 20 mile range left on it too!

The actual car drove fine as we only live round the corner and we got the bikes in the back though it was a bit of a squeeze.
So went back to the showroom to discuss the details.

We're looking at a PCP deal and I told him what I wanted to pay per month as well as the accessories we wanted to add on, protection pack, spare wheel, locking wheel nuts etc. and a service contract - we'll be doing very low mileage.
He says not to worry about the accessories, they won't add much and comes back with a price £15 over my maximum amount! The re-worked it with a bigger deposit to only £5 one my limit. I asked again about the accessories and he said yes, that'll work out at only £10 extra a month, oh and the service costs will be between £12 -£15 a month!
I asked about the services cost and he said it would be £200'ish for the first year and then more the year after etc! I'm pretty sure I've seen £80'ish and £160'ish on MG website!

Oh and additionally, the accessories costs were all way over list price due to "fitting" costs, +£40 for the wheel nuts, +£100 for the protection pack. I gave up after that and said I'd fit them myself.

Overall not the best dealer experience but I have no options car wise if we want to go electric at this stage.

Haven't named and shamed just yet as expecting a call next week with finally offers etc.

I think try another dealership for an offer. Contact Sam Luscombe or Tim Whitworth at Luscombe MG Leeds 0113 277 6099 open till 5pm today and can deliver cars apparently if you don't live anywhere near or are willing to travel for collection. They keep coming up as a great dealership with great offers mentioned frequently on the Facebook MG5 Fans and Owners page.

Hi,
Not a great experience for you.
I went at the end of the month and they wanted the sale so got the protection pack included.
Like you say they like putting on extras, mine was paint treatment and insurance cover Gap?
Is there another dealer nearby?

Thank you for this, just spoken to them and they're calling me back with a quote plus they have a car in stock...

I am curious.... When the dealer says they have the long range car in stock do they literally have spare long range MG5 cars sitting at their dealership? I thought they were just off the boat and it would take time to get them to the dealers. Good news if dealers actually have them on their forecourts ready to sell.

One dealer was able to sell me a long range 2 weeks ago. He got it as demo but was happy to let me take it. I didn't, the deal was better to wait a few weeks

Same here. It will be in their compound in the meantime, not even in the showroom, so I'll be getting it with delivery mileage. I don't quite understand why I cannot have it now when the funds are burning a hole in my (virtual) pocket.

The person I spoke to said the car was there now, he was looking at it as we we’re talking.

Do you really need long range? I managed a return journey from Lincoln to Manchester on Saturday A57/M1/A616/A625/M67/A57 and clock 178 miles with 26% remaining upon return. That would return around 230+ miles. There will be some bargains to be had currently with the original model if the range is not a factor and you can drive a car without the need for the car to steer itself ??.

I got a 1 day registered Excite for £20K cash so the bargains are there.

This is my first electric car and while not a big driver, when we did use the ICE it was mostly for holidays/longer journeys so the mental comfort of having the extra range is what we want at the moment.
We've kept the ICE for 17 years now but as the electric market is developing so quickly I can see us exchanging this car at the end of the four year PCP period.

This is valid reasoning in summer and when new however my personal reason for opting for long range was as follows:

My commute: 160miles round
Winter Range Hit: 30%
Battery Degradation: 1% per year
Fudge factor (traffic jams, not a full charge): 10%

Immediately I am assuming a 75 mile range hit in cold weather. Gives me approx 185 miles range. 10% fudge factor for traffic jams etc drops that to 160 miles.

That's before overall battery degradation assuming similar to Tesla, which after 160k miles or 10 years is another 10%.

I also don't want to be stopping to recharge on a 90 min each way commute!

Just a note for you, I could not get a good idea the cost of a service plan so look up the number on the MG web site and called the company who runs the service plan. They email me the quotes I asked for. Then when I got my car I called them back and set up the one I needed. As to the extra you wish I would ask them to supply and fit and pay for them on a card which you pay off over three months and not put them on the cost of the car.
