Gear shifting in EV mode, Warning

My first impression with driving my brand new MG plug-in Hybrid in 100% EV mode:
The electric drive has a 4 gear transmission systeem which often shifts in a very slow way. The car halts for a moment like someone who cannot find the next gear!
In the hybrid mode with 6 extra gears available here is no problem at all, but in EV I find it troublesome, especially when overtaking traffic on dual roads. At a speed of around 80km/hr while accelerating, a total power cut occurs for about a full second causing decelleration! Anyone who can confirm this?
My hope is improvement in the near future for all owners in that case.
I can confirm this. In hybrid mode also, there is a HUGE 'flat spot' at about the same speed, but it's masked to some extent by the ICE. This is well known, and is certainly a software issue, but whether it will ever be fixed is another matter.

Hi
did you have any feed back on this
Not a thing. I was meant to take it in for another check by my local dealer but required the car to be kept for a week. Will ask them to check on next service.

I do not know why they say it needs to be kept for a week 99% of the time would just sit on the forecourt. Need to be stronger you are the customer if you wish to get any where. My MG Tec says it how the gearbox’s works not the best one in the world but will not let you down fingers crossed.

They were honest about it.. they said that they will test it when they get around to it. I had total loss of power earlier this year but a straight restart fixed it - maybe it was in wrong gear or something. Otherwise it has been good. Now that I am used to it, it doesn't annoy me as much - after all I have driven it like 18k miles

I have it too in Australia. I get the ghost needle that heads to 100% on the power meter during the issue which only gets mentioned once in this thread. I’ll be on the case with the dealer and MG Australia too. Saic need to get this resolved. Love the car, not happy about this issue though.

Stands to reason that this shift delay can be adjusted based on some videos on YT that do not show this slow shift. A few more of these kind of misstep and MG will fade to the back row, with new competition starting to crowed the market, why bother with this kind product shortcomings........?

Confirmed

Update. I took my HS PHEV in for its complimentary 1 month/1500klm service. I had advised them of the issue with loss of power around the 70-80kmh mark in advance. They said there was a software update for the transmission and that the update will also reset its records of the drivers driving style as it learns as you drive. They said it’ll take another 1000klm to learn our driving style and that it wouldn’t be perfect before then. I did notice the lag when driving home in EV mode but it wasn’t as long or noticeable as previous experiences. Fingers crossed this is an improvement but won’t know for sure until I’ve experienced the issue more over the coming weeks.

That sounds promising! Did the workshop install this update on your car?
If not, did they say anything about how it will be rolled out?

I don’t think it’s anything that hasn’t been out for a bit already. You just need someone that can access the updates and install the correct one. It took him about 20 minutes checking through the available MG updates to find the one we needed. I’m sure others in this thread will have received updates too but may not have any success worth mentioning. Like I said, need more time behind the wheel. If it does seem beneficial then I’ll hound the guy to provide more info that I can put in the thread.

To solve all of your problems regarding a complete lack of coordination between the transmission ICE and lag in EV mode.
Simply search AMT Mode for MG HS and follow the instructions to change the setting in Engineering mode in the infotainment system. It has worked for over 4000 owners who have messaged me directly since I first mentioned this on forums in January 2024.

John Smith has studied this along with a colleague since launch in 2019.
It solves everything regardless of PHEV / Automatic DCT and even Manual Transmission.

Hi
Tried to search and keeps coming back to hear, are you able to put a link in?

Look in here for AMT mode. It's owned by myself and my colleague who has studied this for 5 years.

I guarantee it will solve your problems. We have actually received confirmation from SAIC China and MG UK that the MG HS is actually arriving from factory with the AMT setting enabled.

Read the link stories. Nothing to lose ?

This has been used in countries like Taiwan and Australia since 2019. It'll change your car to drive like a VW DSG box. ( One of the best on the market)

Either this version for the original Infotainment system.

Or this one for the upgraded Infotainment system.

Remember your ONLY CHANGING TO AMT MODE FROM AT MODE !!! Do not go playing around in engineering mode.

May I ask what version of the HS di you have?

Please let me know how you get on. We are currently undertaking extensive research in collaboration with MG UK and SAIC China. We have over 5000 HS owners who have replied with positive comments and results in not only handling. But also a 30% fuel efficiency benefit!

Thanks now I see on one screen AT MT AMT so AT is in green and the other two are not so I take it you pree AMT so it turns green ?

I could see the fuel benefit as in winter going to work on 30 mph roads the car will not change up to lower the RPM until 33MPH so using more fuel than should

Old info screen will try tomorrow and let you know how I get on.

I now done the above tomorrow going to work I will try the 30 mph test to see if the car changes better.

Yes change to AMT mode and press okay. Await for the system to reboot and that's it. There's lots on my Facebook page to show you the figures and all the research so far. Please may I suggest you log in to ask any questions. We have over 1000 members dedicated to the AMT mode.

It's best to remember that the MG HS is not a stereotypical Automatic Transmission, as we DO NOT HAVE A TORQUE CONVERTER ( We have a Dual Clutch configuration - Which is more inline with a Automated Manual Transmission configuration)
This is why you will notice that the gear shifts ( which are controlled by the ECU) will be regular and well assimilated now with the engine.

A complete package and an awesome smile ? guaranteed.

Enjoy your drive in your MG HS version 2.0 ?

Definitely a difference in the Drive did the 30 mile an hour check, before changing the setting engine would rev to 2.2 and take some time to change up to drop revs. Now travels at 30 miles an hour and goes straight to 1.8 rpm so that definitely will be fuel savings. Also when engine running and you change from EV ICE there is no over revving of the engine just a smooth transfer in the correct gear, before the the engine cove over rev badly.
Next will be to see if the drops have gone.

Absolutely awesome news. And so happy to see that the AMT mode fix is working in all transmission configurations for the HS including Manual! And PHEV and DCT.

Happy to be of assistance and thinks will only get better now that you've discovered the code. ??

Safe travels wherever your road may lead...and please keep me updated and this forum on your results.

We all deserve a fantastic MG HS
