Yes. The portable EVSE (granny charger) puts in about 2.5kWh an hour.

The only way it is cheaper is that you haven't paid for a home charger. I'm getting a home charger installed this week, the granny charger is too slow.

A home EVSE is normally 7.5kW your granny is about 2.2kW so a third or the power.
You may find it takes 24 hours to charge your car from a low SOC.
How many miles to you do a week?
If you get a 7kW EVSE then you can make use of a single digit p/kWh rate overnight.

@Jomarkh - re your signature - presumably you saw that Ripple went into administration a few days ago?

It's not just the speed, it's also the charging brick gets in the way, and I'm limited on where I can park the car while charging. The convenience wins for me.

Charging at home is the cheapest place unless you've somehow got access to free charging somewhere (e.g. at work).

Go to Octopus & look up their go tarriff. You will pay around 9p per unit for several hrs per night vs what 28p normally at home of 50 to 85p off a public charger.

Get an intelligent charge point & you can use there intelligent go where all the scheduled charging is at 7p

Other providers do similar schemes

Strangely I was quite content using the 3 pin evse when I was stuck on a capped rate (due to Shell Energy selling to Octopus), I'd just charged as and when I needed to with a bit of bonus solar as and when. Once the transfer completed I switched to Go to get 5 hours at 8.5p, I found myself only charging at night and then I found it inconvenient as I would end up plugging in for 2 or 3 consecutive nights to add around 50% charge. Ultimately this was the driver for getting a Zappi and it looks like I will be charging 3 or 4 times a month instead of 11-12 with the 3 pin.

Each to their own. Whatever suits. I'll stick to me Granny Charger 2-3 times a week, perfect. 🙂👍

I agree entirely, if it works for you then go for it. IfI was still on the capped rate I wouldn't be trying to squeeze my charging into a 5 hour slot. After10+ years of using Lipo batteries in my hobby I've found that survive longer if I use 60%+ of their capacity before recharging so I try to run the car down to 20-30% before pushing it back to 75-80%, now I can do that in one 6 hour session.

That's what I've found, I seem to be having to top it up all the time because if I let it get too low it takes so long to get it back up to a decent level.

There are other options for the technically minded out there to get a bit more charging power over a BS1363 socket based granny delivering a maximum of 10A. For example, using a portable charger via a European Schuko socket or having a 16A or even 32A commando socket installed (a la Tesla), with the necessary PEN fault detection if you're not on a TT earthing arrangement.

Charged mine almost exclusively through 3 pin plug for last 13,500 miles (do about 250 miles a week). Never once needed or wished I had a 7.5kw home charger. As others have said each to their own but I find that if I drive 100 miles a day (or less) the granny charger works perfect for me.
