Lane Assist Trying To Kill Me!

Unpopular opinion from an Aussie, but I reckon LKA exposes the way people drive these days by intervening when drivers attention is distracted by everything from devices to doing their lipstick.
When driving, concentrate on just that and you won’t be rudely distracted by being reminded that you should be concentrating.

So Philz, do you only drive on well marked roads, do you always want to stick to the middle of your lane?
Try driving on unmarked country roads with gravel verges.

Do you never have to move over a bit to go round obstructions, cyclists etc.

Getting redirected straight at a giant blue gum, over slippery gravel, or getting thrown into the path of oncoming traffic is never a good experience.

You're right, that would be an unpopular option.

When the car tries pulling you off the road as it follows a puddle instead of the lane or in heavy rain on a bend it yanks that hard you lose traction.

I've tried to live with it regularly yanking me towards the kerb or oncoming traffic as I don't think you should have to turn it off daily.

After updating I went for a drive & it was a lot more subtle, back on shift today so I will see what it's like on my commute where on one road in particular it's really bad.

Come and drive on some of our country roads. When you get yanked towards an oncoming B-double for no good reason you might change your mind.

Yet another car review on the MG4 has been posted on Youtube in recent days. This time by Transport Evolved. They have driven hundreds of cars and say the LKA is the worst of any car they have driven. This is echoed by the Which? report and also by Fully charged. To suggest what Philz has said is plainly wrong (polite response, I could have said much more :) )

That's true, you used to have a different avatar, care to remind us!!!!! :D
Cor blimey Mary Poppins....

Nothin' wrong with sorting yer lippy out at the lights... You know the ones, take half an hour to change ?

Yes, this - there is an A road near us, with lots of trees with light and shadow. Driving happily along, fire engine approaching on the other side of the road, and just as it's passing, car decides it wants to aggressively steer me towards it...!

Having to wrestle with the car like that is somewhat concerning... on the other hand it does keep you awake... ?

I had it in for software updates on Monday though, and there were various updates done, and so far it does seem to be an improvement.

Here I am in a Kia Soul courtesy car. It was hard enough getting it into drive mode never mind anything else (still can't figure out how to stop it freezing me) and turning off LKA isn't on the agenda right now. Sure, I'd rather it was off, but it's not too hard to manage. It isn't grabbing the wheel the way Caliban's LKA does if I forget to switch it off.

I now see what people mean about the MG4 version being a holy nightmare. I'll switch this off as and when I can, but I could envisage getting used to it if I really had to. With the MG4 it's simply a no-no all the way.

I loved my Kia Soul but it was a 2018 version with none of this assist nonsense on. Gear lever like a standard ice auto. Leap in and go and superb quality.
No idea how they've ' progressed ' in the meantime. Actually went in to buy a new one when I ended up with the MG4 (£8K cheaper) .
I'm guessing the minor irritations of the MG4 are common to all marques now.
Having a set memory for my preferences would be heaven. Dreading the day I leap in and go and have forgotten to set my preferences, although as Tow Mode is constantly on ?? and the rest are speed sign recognition, sleepy driver prompt and adaptive regen it probably won't affect my driving experience too much if I forget to be fair.

The LKA on my holden is quite benign on well marked city roads, it's very easy to live with and I don't bother turning it off. However on unmarked country roads it's another nightmare. There's not much traffic, so I haven't had it throwing me into oncoming trucks, BUT there are huge trees, and the stones on the verge do a very good job of impersonating ball bearings.
There's no way you can wrench the steering when you hit them at speed, without going sideways.

This Kia has 24 number plates and its gear select is a wheel like the MG4's. It has an on/off button which I actually like. But the interior seems old-fashioned compared to the MG4 so I wondered if it was actually an older model. Lots of buttons, which I'm not really used to any more. No auto-hold, which is a bit disconcerting. It seems to do driver profiles though, because the name of its usual driver came up on the screen.

It is also the ugliest car I have ever seen. I feel I want to put a tarpaulin over it, now it's parked in my drive.

How very rude ?
I know what you mean though. It is an acquired taste for sure. I wasn't too keen on it when I first got it, thought of it as having the aerodynamics of Chugalug from the Anthill Mob ( Wacky Races) but it was so useful, regards load capacity.
I was truly sad to see it go, having personalised it somewhat early on ( from S.Korean cartoon character to Badass ?? )

....a bit off topic but I'll leave you to guess the before / after ???

I'm surprised by your comment about load capacity. The reception girl opened the boot to check that the charging cable was there, not that I'm likely to need it, and my immediate thought was, I've never seen such a small boot since a weird Toyota hire car I had in Ireland once that would barely take a suitcase. However, when I got to the supermarket on the way home I totally failed to get the boot open at all, and put my purchases on the back seat instead. Not sure they would have fitted in the boot along with the charging cable to be honest.

Maybe the blue is a bit better-looking than the red.... nah.

I'd take an e-mtb and camping gear in the back for weekends out playing. The back seats spent a lot of time folded down ?.
There was enough room when they were up for the weekly 'Big Shop' .... what else is there ??

NCAP are looking at forcing more buttons
I personally think everything on a screen is dangerous & it looks like NCAP now agree
