If youre currently paying £0 for your VED, it may be worthwhile retaxing your car before the budget just in case the pile some additional charges onto the price band. It doesnt matter if your RFL hasnt expired, simply go on line, click renew, put your reg and Document reference number from your V5C and job done. Certainly needs to be done just before the VED rise next year in April

Mine's due 01-Mar-25 as I did the renew trick back in March. (Otherwise it would have been due next month ready for 01-Nov-24). I'll take my chances re. the budget. :)

It costs nothing and may save a few £££, never know with this lot.
Never say never - but the chances of them loading taxation onto existing EVs now is slim to non-existent. Any changes would almost certainly apply from April 2025 - in which case my VED renewal in March already has that covered. :)

I must say I am disproportionately pleased to hear of this wheeze! There is nothing like a bit of unexpected money saving to bring joy disproportionate to the money! Thank you.
I feel no guilt on this, when the likes of Starmer and his disciples getting £100k plus of freebies in the first few weeks in office, if I can safeguard my pennies a little by doing this, Im on it :)

I'm sure you're well aware that @Rolfe meant the cancel and then renew process for zero-rated VED vehicles. They could quite easily prevent that option being available (without first having to SORN the vehicle) - i.e. close that loophole by requiring SORN first. After all, nobody would reasonably cancel tax and then renew straight away unless it was to the keeper's benefit.

Of course, if the keeper is having to pay money for the tax then that cancel/renew mechanism works in the Gov's favour. :)

I agree that it is unlikely that they'll close that loophole, but that doesn't mean they won't if they can see a revenue upside by doing so.

Yes, that's what I meant. After taking the trouble to ensure that I won't have to pay road tax until March 2026, there's a possibility that I could end up locking myself into having to pay in September 2025 if I tried this game.

The term loophole is what i disagreed with, and you dont cancel anything, you simply extend the tax for 12 months. I really dont see the problem in renewing now just in case they make a change in the budget no matter how unlikely that is.

Anyway, not to worry, all members feel free to do as you like it was only a suggestion from me not an instruction!

Hi Johnb80 it is a good suggestion that you have put forward but it only applies to owners who did not take advantage of this hack in March 24.
As it stands if you were to renew now that would delay your road tax payment for 6 months only and RFL payment would be due 1st October 25
For the likes of Siteguru, Rolfe, myself and countless others I’m sure who renewed in March 24 we are due to renew again in March 25 which will still be free of charge and then when the rules change in 1st of April 25 my RFL payment is not due until 1st of March 26.
So as stated by Siteguru and Rolfe I too will stick with what I have thank you.
