Starting a thread to discuss the new upcoming MG ZS EV.

It will be on the new module based platform, like that used on the MG4 model.
So, from the ground up it should be a better designed EV than the previous models that were derived from the original ICE model.
Price point will be very interesting, as I think it is very likely to be locking horns firmly with many of the other competitors now.
No longer are MG’s seen at the temping price points in the market that they were once very well know for.

wondering if this could be a replacement for the MG ZS?
Perhaps. Though this one is RWD (good IMO), and all LFP (also good IMHO, but won't suit all).

Also, just because SAIC got this design approved, doesn't necessarily mean that they'll produce it, or export. But I have to say it's a lot of work to just leave it wither on the vine; in other words, it seems likely to me that they'll manufacture and export it.

If the top spec model has enough range, or they produce an NMC version after all, then I can't see the sense selling this alongside a new ZS. So yes, it might well replace the ZS. Maybe the new ZS is ready to go and this one is still a year or two away, then maybe it will replace the new ZS in 2026 or 2027.

If it's based on the common platform, there's much less work involved in coming up with a new design.

maybe this thread could be merged under one subject with

[ Edit Coulomb: I decided against merging the above, it was very early and speculative. I merged two others with this one, including the below. ]

just came across this article (see thread) - not new ZS but I would seriously look at this as ZS replacement once new ZS is out ... could this be that "new ZS" ?

This is more likely to be a replacement for the ZS EV rather than the 5

This will likely be the replacement for the ZS EV, as MG have said that the ZS and ZS EV will be 2 different models, the new ZS will be Hybrid and the new ZS EV will be based on the MG4 platform

It makes sense for MG to use the MG4 platform for the very popular SUV market. If they improve the Info, centre and drivers panel, iron out some or all of the issues MG4 owners have been experiencing, then they would have another winner. Particularly if they keep the price down.

A note for those Googling.... "mgs5" is commonly used to refer to "Metal Gear Solid 5", which is a somewhat different proposition!

If the UK market launch is early 2025 (as rumoured), hopefully it will show up soon in China for us to get a better idea of it.

This naming suggests that the forthcoming MG4 Estate will be badged the MG5 but actually be a stretched MG4 with a different rear end. (We know the 5 replacement is a 4 estate, the naming is my speculation only).

This has already been accepted by MG UK as the successor to the MG ZS EV, however it will not be called the ZS EV as they will be moving the ZS and EV seperately as 2 different model lines, next year there will also be a larger EV SUV, similar in size to the HS coming as well as the self charging hybrid HS,

There is nothing official yet about a replacement MG5 as the bigger selling models will be replaced first as a bigger priority

It is quite official that the MG5 replacement will be an estate version of the MG4. It is due around the end of this year but timing is less certain.

MG are changing their naming, if you look at the naming they are using with their EV ranges (not petrol), their IM brand and the forthcoming 9/S9 and this, then a pattern is emerging:
  • Number denotes size
  • 'S' denotes SUV version

Therefore the new MG ZS is the MGS5, being the SUV version of their new '5' model, which will sit alongside the MG5 replacement (both being on the new EV platform pioneered with the MG4), which is why I am suggesting the new MG5 will still be called MG5 and not MG4 Estate - my guess is that they won't make a separate 5 from the 4 Estate.

There's plenty of room below the '3' for smaller cars. The 6/S6, 7/S7 sizes are being defined in the new IM range and the MG9/S9 cap the large vehicle range.

Older petrol platform cars may keep the same naming as present, so you may still be able to buy an MG ZS with a petrol engine, alongside the MGS5, but it will be a different car on a different platform and we still have the HS.

I may be wrong, but this is what I see.

Yes, the MG5 replacement will be based on the platform of the MG4, however it will not be just an MG4 Estate, the concept images in the media arent fully correct, all cars have their own distinctive look with similar styling rather than being just the same looking,

What you state about IM may be correct, however is not factually correct about MG,

As seen already the MG S5 name will likely be in China only, the same as the MG4 was sold over there originally as the MG Mulan, Audi own the trademark for S5 so it would be extremely unlikely that it would be called the S5 globally

Theoretically speaking all the new EV's coming out whether bigger or smaller than the MG4 will be based on the same Scalable platform.

Currently speaking the New HS is the platform of the Roewe RX5 and the MG5 EV is the platform of the Roewe Ei5

I would suggest holding off anticipating the cars being numbered with an S to denote SUV until officially confirmed, for all we know at the moment the new models coming could have completely new names we have never heard of before like the Cyberster for instance

Ok, I'll hold off. I'd completely forgotten about trademarks getting in the way! Thanks for reminding me.

Here's a reference to a recent case that is relevant:
