there is a shipment arriving at the end of feb with a load of MGs on board, so I assume yours is one of them!

Anyone know what the semiconductor issue is really, lack of factories, lack of raw materials, workforce shortages. Don't these things get throw out of machines by the thousand per hour once designed and given sufficient raw materials?

Surely SAIC make their own via a subsidiary?

All a bit odd really.

Apparently they had a large fire ? at the factory.
I think SAIC have announced they intend to produce their own micro chips now ?.

According to the Sales Manager who called me, the important factor here is the shipping.
He told me that it is currently very difficult to deliver the vehicles, because the shipping both on land and at sea is currently overloaded.

Shortage of chips in all makes causing delivery delays but the shipping is overloaded seems counter intuitive.

A fire at one factory causes worldwide semiconductor shortage. Wish I had share in that company if they had such market share, with my luck my shares would be in the insurers

The port director of Liverpool docks has just been interviewed on TV about supply chain delivery times due to covid. He said that a port in China (he didn't say which one) has had severe congestion problems due to covid and the restrictions that the government has put in place, this has meant a real world delay from manufacture to delivery of 2 to 4 weeks on what they would normally expect.

the important factor here is the shipping.

With respect to the semiconductor shortage specifically, I thought that the main issue was a fire in a Renesas factory. But according to the Wikipedia page, it's mainly Covid, adverse weather, and a series of fires, the latest of which was just recently in Berlin.

Chip making is an extremely specialised task, requiring extreme clean room facilities, lots of ultra clean water, highly skilled labour, and much capital investment. So you can't just start up another factory in a year.

While many chips are relatively easy to make and are indeed spat out by the thousands, or more, the critical ones are more complex, the yield is much lower (perhaps only 5% of chips on a wafer actually work), and I believe that it's these microcontrollers that are the biggest problem for auto makers.

Then there are the even more complex chips that are being used for AI, e.g. in Tesla FSD hardware, and the computers that train these. But I don't think that these are a huge bottleneck at present. Of course, that could quickly change.

50% of some parts of chip manufacturing are concentrated in one Taiwanese company. There are many that worry about how the tensions between China and Taiwan might affect the global economy, given how essential advanced chips are to modern productivity.

Yes just had the same info from my dealer. MG5LR ordered end of November, expected to arrive 28th Feb for collection first week of March ,fingers crossed.
