ZS EV Trophy LR
Evening.
I have 2023 ZS EV Trophy LR bought not leased.
I tried to use Tesla supercharges at Trentham using Tesla app and failed as “Unauthorised vehicle” despite an MG4 alongside succeeding.
I have since paid £140 for a “non warranty “ software upgrade to enable this at MG Derby.
Disappointingly I was still unable to succeed this evening on Derbion Superchargers.
Questions:
1. Does the Tesla App need to recognise my vehicle as it will not accept the VIN “unable to claim ownership “ .see photo
2. Is it simply that the software upgrade was incorrect or incomplete? See photo
3. Is it simply that the incorrect charger was used this evening? Photo attached

The charging on Tesla superchargers is probably the most seamless of any charger.

So, no, they haven't done it properly.

They need to test the things they are fixing.

Take it back.

That last screen asking for VIN - I don't remember having that question asked on Tesla app ... I don't think it asked me for anything about the car; I just checked my Tesla app and there is nothing about what car I use ...

Have you tried another Tesla charger or have you tried connecting the cable few times? Last time I charged I had to fiddle around with app taking longer than normal - guess it was poor signal area on my phone so in your case could be anything, not only the car ... Try again on one or two other Tesla chargers but also call your dealer and say upgrade doesn't work, ask to be fixed since you paid already

The charger looks like the one I used last but I spent 5 min trying before the charge started ...

Update.
I have spoken with Tesla and you do not need to add vehicle to app to use it. Everything is in place on my Tesla account and app and the chargers I have tried are working and compatible.
So back to Stoneacre MG Derby to get this resolved as appears to be the software upgrade that isn’t working.
Fingers crossed.
Anyone else had Tesla software upgrade done in Derby/ Nottingham area?

what did they say about the last screen asking for VIN or lease car? If the app was saying that's the problem, it may not be the car ... (unless you clicked you have Tesla car? - check the app settings once again)

But yes, best to take it back to your dealer to double check. You could ask them to pop around to nearest Tesla with them and demonstrate ...

It isn't the chargers. They are pretty much plug and play. As soon as you select the post number on the app, with it plugged in, the connection is established within a minute in my experience across multiple Tesla superchargers across the UK and France. It should be seamless.

Taking it back to the dealer is the right move.

On one occasion in Reading Tesla, took me at least 5 min to start the charge and multiple tries on the app to start/connect. Not sure why as the day before, same place - no problems at all ...

Had the update (£99 at harrogate mg) done this week but not had a chance to test it yet.

Service guy had a statetment from mg that he read out before they would do it. It did say that they didnt guarantee that it would work and that the mg4 was the only mg that was approved by tesla.

Sounds ridiculous

How can they not say it may not work when they literally know how to fix it and have cars running around working.

This isn't an organic system where conditions are unknown or are highly variable - on the ZS it's logical software update on a known set of hardware.

Bonkers.

Just been on an Aylesbury to Motherwell run over the weekend … used Trentham Gardens on Thursday morning on my ZS LR gen2 and all went well - then second charge at Gretna and then run straight to Motherwell where I granny charged at my friends place after a run out to Kirkcaldy for a film shoot … literally on way back - was going to reverse the stops but Gretna was full with half a dozen EVs waiting so I went 5 miles down the road to use Todhills South superchargers (which were empty !) … currently sitting having a hot chocolate on the Costa here while the MG is chugging 50kW from the charger ?

I also added the Tesla £8.99 membership for 30 days which I reckon I will have covered the fee and saved a couple of £ on just in this trip - cut the kWh price by around 12-15p it seems and is cancellable :)

Sounds like the s/ware update didn’t run properly as the Tesla app/charger conversation doesn’t require a VIN for non-Teslas …

Did it say unauthorised vehicle ‘ while you were waiting for it to work? I connected and it just says ‘unauthorised vehicle’ and nothing else.

No, I don't remember "unauthorised" being on screen (been long time now...) It was in a poor mobile phone signal area (Reading festival with tens of thousands of people clogging the network) and I suspect that was the problem for delayed connection...

Are you at one of the open Tesla chargers that you checked on your Tesla app as available?

Yes checked on the Tesla app. M5 Frankley services southbound. Activated charging on the app. It dithered for 30 seconds or so then showed ‘unathorised vehicle’ in the screen. They have only recently been installed so they must be the newer style chargers .

Does anyone have any details on the actual software version needed to charge at Tesla public superchargers? I regularly charge my MG4 at Frankley South Services with no issues at all, works like a dream. Having recently also bought an MG ZS, I also got the “unauthorised vehicle” message. I contacted MG customer services who checked my VIN and said I had the latest software installed and the issue was with Tesla not opening their network to the latest MG models. Seems odd as have used many other CCS chargers with no issues. Also seems strange that other ZS users here seem able to charge?

Might be worth trying another charger or trying another location to see if it's the car or the charger. Some ZSs needed that Tesla fix... if the car is new, they should fix it
