That is quite a difference. The trip home is slightly uphill, as well as being a minute quicker and 2mph more, but 27.4 mpg more is a lot. Overall, the car indicates 58.9 mpg and has done so for weeks now, no matter what driving we do.

Yes, mine also indicates 58.9 but I take it with a pinch of salt, particularly as I have been using the aircon a lot this past week and the figure still hasn't budged. The highest I have seen on it is 99mpg and I wasn't driving any differently, the traffic wasn't any different and I wasn't going downhill with the wind behind me.

Press mode button twice in to Eco, regen depends if most flat and level, leave it at 2 if a lot off up and down maybe three to take advantage of the more extreme regen (I wasn't keen on 3 in traffic but you can put it on a star button I think, my downfall is I gas it away from the lights, but on the other hand I look far ahead to anticipate, no point in gassing it towards a red light or queue of traffic, foot off whenever I can too.

Mine just constantly reads 57.7, Seems a bit strange to me.

The overall indicator will stay pretty much constant. It is the "from start" indicator that you can get more readings from. Push the middle right steering wheel button and that lets you use the right toggle to scroll between various readouts, like tyre pressure.

Our overall is at 58.9 and settled at that after a few weeks. I suspect we would need to do a high mileage at a very different mpg to get it to change. Unlike any other car I have had, where mpg goes up or down by 0.1 at a time, the MG jumps about. I presume that is because the engine is not running constantly. But, I do not know if mpg is calculated only when the engine is running, or for overall miles covered.

from out house to the town centre is 1.7 miles, into eco and regen all the way on mode 2, should flick it into 3 but not set it up for that yet.

I floored it this morning on a private road and sucked 86Kw out of it just for fun.

I have mine on the star button on the right as it's handy when you encounter a steep descent. Like Kev, I keep it in two mostly as three is just a bit too coarse in traffic. I can't see the point in using one at any stage. Anticipation is the key, looking ahead and easing off the gas, makes for a smoother journey.
