MG3 hybrid MPG down 20% since start of December compared to summer. Dealer checked this out. Found nothing of concern. Said -20% normal in winter. Are you experiencing any reduction?

this is correct, the fuel consumption will be higher in the winter as the battery is less efficient, meaning the engine is on more to keep it charged as well as having the heating on

Hi Jeff. Re fuel economy...Did a 61 mile run yesterday, mixture of dual carriageway, town & country and busy motorways. Outside temp showing 8deg. Mode normal, mostly on ACC, normal driving style. Heater/AC on 28deg, blower on midway, seats and steering wheel on most of the time. MPG registered 56mpg. Oddo at 2758 miles. More than happy. H

That's normal in winter especially with the heating system relying on the engine so the internal combustion engine is needed much more than in summer/spring

Hi Aitch see my post of 23rd January titled "mismatch between fuel and display". In my case the MPG is consistently over estimating against the actual fuel used anywhere between 4 & 11% so I would not be confident you actually got as high as 56pg in reality.

Hi Topbloke. Just read your post and, yes, it is a bit disturbing. I'll keep a check of petrol used against miles driven over the next few weeks. Cheers

All ICE cars suffer from increased fuel consumption in the winter and hybrids seem to take a bigger percentage hit than full ICE cars probably because batteries lose some capacity in lower temperatures and there is a greater load on the engine to provide heat for the cabin. This is my experience from driving Toyota hybrids for 5 years. However you can console yourself with the knowledge that even with a winter drop in fuel consumption you are still doing a lot more MPG than a non hybrid. The MPG will pick up as outside temperatures rise through spring and into summer.
I don't think it is anything to consult the dealer about.

Also I keep detailed figures of the quantity of petrol I put in and the miles covered and work out the MPG. The average consumption per tank shown on the dash is always better than the actual MPG. Its been that way on all the cars I have had. I have been keeping records of full consumption (and household energy and water use) since the mid 19990's. I like figures and a good graph.

Please let me know your own findings as & when, I havent spoken with dealer about the iussue
My euphoria with the MG3 has diminished drastically after working out the MPG for the last 802 miles. Mileage at start, 2498...at finish 3300. Petrol used 23.91gals, (90.46ltrs). I get that to 33.54 mpg! Somebody please tell me my calculations are wrong. I consider myself a very light-footed driver so this result is a real downer.

You used US gallons when converting to (from?) litres. There are 4.546 litres per UK gallon. If you were measuring fuel usage in litres, then its fewer UK gallons, so you would be getting more miles per UK gallon.

Just go fully metric! 🤓

Thank you. You've saved my sanity! What a berk using US gallons. So I'm getting 40.31 mpg. In winter driving I'm happy with that. Thanks again for the lesson. H

Hi Topbloke. Monitored the last 800 miles and actual mpg is 40.31. SWMBO is a real 'frozen' wench and likes the heater on full belt, plus seats. So I'm not too upset about the usage. The thought has crossed my mind, however, about the added usage due to having the heater on. If I use the blower only, without AC, does this still affect the mpg? I tested the car with a run of about thirty ish miles, heater on 29, blower only, a mix bag of driving and the dash was showing 53mpg, but not sure if this a true reading. Will have to do more tests, I think. H

I found the same problem. And was told the same. Try adjusting to eco mode and high recovery mode, which should push your MPG back up
