We have two quotes now, but neither one mentions servicing the EV side of the car, has anyone else had a quote for that.

The way I see it is the engine is an engine and can be serviced much cheaper elsewhere so why pay dealer rates.

You would just need to ensure the garage were using oem spec oil and filters to ensure the warrenty is not voided.
The extended warranty for years 4, 5 6 & 7 is conditional on a full service history. So you would need to keep invoices, etc as evidence. Anyone on a PCP without a full service history might need to check the conditions of the finance agreement as this might incur a reduced value on trade in.

MG Australia states that warranty service can be carried out by any qualified service outlet, it need not be an MG Service Centre. The new cars being sold now carry a 10 year warranty. I have yet to see a specific service list of activities to be carried out, but would imagine in the case of the MG3 Hybrid, its a typical ICE oil (0W-20 C5 SP is specified) and filter change. Heck my local Lube Mobile guy could do it, as long as I get a receipt that itemises the activity. These mobile guys are qualified to do log book service. I am seriously considering avoiding the 46km (one way) drive to the nearest MG service centre.

No service book to stamp is a hurdle I suppose.
Buy a small folder or document wallet and keep every scrap of paper that you get for any servicing or repairs in it. Make sure every invoice is dated and has a record of the mileage on it.

So my dealings with the Australian MG service organisation, shows that they keep software records for each vehicle (by VIN). This is a virtual service book system. I know when my first service is due and will be required to book in for that. They will likely remind me, based in time, but they do not seem to know how many kilometres (or miles) the vehicle has covered. If I do choose to have service done elsewhere, it is likely that the applicable service receipt would be then have to be noted in MGs system. I assume MG will be able to produce a hard copy of the vehicle's service history on request. But yeah, no service book is a bummer.

The warranty documentation for Ireland, which I assume is basically the same in other markets states the following:

The onus would be on the customer to prove that the work was carried out at the appropriate time and to the appropriate standard using OE parts and fluids. The first three years would be straight forward in that regard. The extended warranty could be the stumbling block, and this is where the value of accurate records cannot be over emphasised.

Yes i see your point. Different country MG importer operations fo not adhere to the same warranty programs. Its pretty obvious that UK based customers are faced with a choice of service plans, and extended warranty options. As far as Australia is concerned, there is one warranty, which is whatever is in effect at the time of purchase. On July 2024, when i purchased my MG3 Hybrid, the warranty was 7 years, Unlimited Kilometres including battery.. A few months later they switched to Lifetime Warranty to a maximum of 250,000kms. There are no service plans as far as i can tell. There are prices for the annual service, but i have not seen an plan marketing. However, i paid cash for my car, perhaps only finance customers get offered those plan bundles. I have never been a fan of bundling anything with a vehicle purchase, because they put a good margin on everything, from floor mats to servuce plans and extended warranties.

Exhibit A.

The warranty in Ireland is 7 years but as with nearly all of these things, the small print reveals that the final four years are conditional ( hence they term these as extended). I imagine there is something similar in the small print of the Australian one, as it limits the liability on the distributer.

Interstingly, I came across the following from an Australian MG delear site and it gives a pretty good description of what records need to be kept:

Perhaps. And I don't want to start a debate about who does it best. Suffice to say each country importer, must comply with that countries legal obligations in relation to warranties, etc. And they are likely to take into account what the competition is doing and offering as well. Australia is experiencing a big wave of Chinese built imports, Geely, Xpeng, BYD, GWM, GAC, all seeking to differentiate their offering, within the legally required framework. At the end of the day we all live where we live, and are stuck with the framework we are offered. It is a bit of a mute point to me, as a 75 year old, I may not outlive my warranty. It's a good car regardless.

DeclanB, yes i have seen that, and when asked about it the dealer simply said their system tracks it all, and to keep any receipts for work performed by others. Obviously aside from oil changes and filters, I would likely use MG Service. As I said above I live a long way from the nearest service centre, and having the option for routine maintenance done locally, whether through Ultra tune or others, is great for me.

It makes sense. I'm lucky, my dealer is a 5 minute drive away.

With there being no service books anymore for owners how can they know what is required for each service to keep within warranty conditions, if they choose to take it to an independent garage rather than there more expensive MG garage?

Could suggest you look on the MY MG Service plans and try to find a garage that now can only do services and see if there is a price difference.

To be honest, it is a minefield trying to get any info at all, almost like they are not sure how to service them, surely the EV side must get at least a visual check or an OBD2 type plug in to check for any codes.

I think most people are over thinking about service cars, in my dads bay you would remove plug clean or replace change oil and filter change air filter Check tappit clearances also points and adjust brakes were hub so had to be taken off and cleaned out also and have the shoes relined check gear box and diff oil.

On your car and and the HS PHEV I had most of that has gone also there is nothing to do on the EV side just check the coolant level until time to replace the fuilds. Most of the service is replace filters and visual checks. On a Full EV is less unit around the forth service.

My point exactly, none of it is mentioned in the servicing list from either garage.

They did mention new sump plug washers and changing the fob battery though

That’s because most of it is visible inspection, when I had my Hs PHEV serviced I would get a sheet and it was just mostly inspected and a tick on the things done,
Cars now do not need much intervention on a service.

I was told the service centre would have to have access to the MG portal which they have to pay for to record the service. I have just booked my 1st service which is £137 about £50 less than I have previously seen. Maybe MG is listening to us and reducing their extortionate charges.
