MG4 - First UK dealer hands on photos and specifications

How come you never received an invite this time Miles ?.
That’s a bit mean & spiteful ? !.
I remember you had one to the ZS EV Gen 1 launch in London ( I think it was ) back in 2019 ?.
Did James ( James & Kate ) get one this year do you know ?.
Nope, not me, nor James.

I went to the ZS EV MK2 launch in London, and me and James went to Longbridge to film with the MG5 SR

Well Miles, I guess that begs the question - “Who the hell HAVE they invited then ?”.
Just the motoring journalist then Miles !.
Many of which know very little about the facts and features of how an electric cars really operates.
Yeah - That’s about right, send them.
Not the people who really help promote / sell and serve the customers on the front line, with their concerns and complaints.
Really looking forward to your personal review of the MG4.
I think it will be a LOT of demand for this car.
I love the higher ride height and easy access of our ZS EV Trophy ? LR.
It really suits our needs just fine, the range is amazing ! ( it’s a Chorley car OBTW ).
Without my mobility issues, I would have already ordered a MG 4 Trophy LR by now !.
I am in the same camp as you, I think the Trophy ? offers SO much more value for money IF your budget can stretch that far.
It has been the same on the previous models though to be honest.
Both of our ZS EV’s have been the higher spec versions with the full pan roof, real shame to see it has now been removed.
I agree with you, I think the orange colour on the MG 4 is brave choice and is clearly aimed at a younger age group than the OAP group like myself ?.
Looks nice though !.
Would probably go for the grey and play safe like Barry !.
Enjoyed the pod cast last night, as usual very informative ?.

I’m with you Geoff ( lovemyev ) appears strange that people like Miles who works hard within and is really interested in the product is not invited in my working life this kind of treatment was known as Mushroom Management. Anyhow it’s now -13:45 and I can’t believe I have not had the chance yet to watch last nights podcast to much going on at the moment but. I’m looking forward to doing so later when everyone’s as left but could be get late tonight
So a family member turn up in this last night and at first glance side on I thought it was the MG4

Lol , wow I didn't pick up how the design elements from the CHR had been copied by MG designers hehe. I suppose the similarities stop when we know that Toyota has magical self charging EVs versus MGs plug it in job ;)

Yes Les, at first glance you CAN see the resemblance !.
The colour probably first grabbed your attention.
A family member has just sold his CRH that he had owned from new.
His wife never liked it, because she said that when entering the passengers seat, she would occasionally hit her head on the steep front windscreen “A” post.
She tried riding in the back and she said it felt it very claustrophobic.
The roof drops away very quickly at the rear ( ( like the roof on a coupe’ ) and the rear windows are very small.
Which can be seen in your picture Les.
The interior was black, which made it even worse.
A pan roof would have helped brighten up the interior, but by and large, it proved too much in the end and he replaced it with a Volvo.
Other owners have I spoken too, agreed with the issues I have high lighted.
Hopefully the MG4 is better in this regard.

Might be a dumb question but is the interior of MG4 more spacious than the Nissan leaf?

We owned a 2017 leaf

Begs the question - having put £500 on deposit for a 5-LR Trophy this MG4 (which I'd thought wouldn't be out forever) is £2K less for a more (imho) 'exciting looking' car - decisions decisions.

Ummm.
Hi @Pat.
I guess the simple question ??‍♂️ is this, do you really need all of that extra rear space that is on offer from from the MG5 estate car ?.
If the answer is still - Yes !.
Then stick with your first choice.
If you can manage with less rear boot space offered, by what is a roomy five door hatchback, then I would give the MG 4 some very serious consideration.
The MG4 is a ground up EV which is always a better option.
I think the interior space in the MG4 will be very impressive, for this very reason.
Boot space is your biggest consideration I would say ?.
We have a ZS EV LR face lift and am very happy with it.
With mobility issues, we now find getting in and out of a car with a lower ride height, a real struggle.
The higher ride hight of the ZS EV is much easier on our old bones !.
For this reason, the MG5 and the MG4 is out of the question.
I have to think with my head and not my heart anymore.
Buy want need and not what you want !.

On the subject of ride height, @Miles Roberts CG how would you say it compared to and ID3 or the ZS EV? Inbetween the two, lower then the id3, or the same?

My brother wanted a higher SUV ride height and as such the ZS EV was originally in the shortlist. However, rear passenger seats felt a bit awkward when I rented one. It's mentioned above the the MG4 will be a roomy hatchback, but does this extend to the seat area for the rear passengers.

Need to see a.carwow rear passenger test.

I think Miles said the ground clearance on the MG4 was about 15 cm ( 6 inches ).
Therefore a LOT lower to the ground than the ZS EV.
The MG4 ( like the ID 3 ) is roomy, built on a EV platform 5 door hatch back.
However, the ZS EV ( derived from an ICE car ) is a small SUV ( Crossover ) with a much higher ride height.
Not even close really, Chalk and cheese comes to mind ?.

Hiya yeh I think the colour did do it but the bottom of the doors more so, even the spoiler and the headlamps are very similar size I know the Mg4 spoiler is kind of in two pieces but side on looks about the same size to me could be totally wrong when the 4 does come along I know.

Yeh I two I’m hoping the interior space is good in the 4 the pictures do give that impression but again i don’t like black interior in cars not my choice, I’m most disappointed the the new 5 is only coming to the UK with a black interior again, when loads of pictures from other countries have shown it the MG5 with a light gray or cream inside I was really set on the lighter colour.
Might just stick with what I’ve got for a extra year or two until something better comes along BYD perhaps who knows what might be here in a year or two.
Les.

I currently have a C-HR, and this maybe why I like the MG4 so much. never really thought about it till now lol

Speak for yourself ???, I’m a “OAP” and I love the orange, it’s all a matter of choice I suppose.

I put a £500 deposit on the mg4 on The 8th of August I ordered the trophy in orange how do I I find out where I am in line to get mine
I placed a pre order on the 5th August.
My dealer emailed me last week confirming that it was placed on the MG ordering system and will update as to the delivery date,

It's tricky for a dealer to say precisely where you are in line at the moment, as whilst they will know what position you are within their orders, they won't be able to see whether you are the 1st, 10th, or 100th person in the UK who has ordered that colour and specification combination.
But once MG UK has consolidated the orders, they will be able to advise on the likely dates as advised by the system.

It's tricky for a dealer to say precisely where you are in line at the moment, as whilst they will know what position you are within their orders...
Accepting the colour combo and edition dimension to order placement, do the MG order books all use the same central ordering system? So for example if 111001 was the first order and someone was 112001 they could start to assume they will be on the Q4/winter shipment.

Or are all orders for all models (MG5, ZS) share the same.order numbers? In that case then no point trying even work it out!

Noticed this (Trophy LR)

Kerb Weight (kg) 1685
Gross Vehicle Weight (kg) 2133

With that in mind it Looks like London based MG4 friends might get a nasty surprise on the Rotherhithe tunnel... There is a 2ton limit to use it. Regardless of vehicle type. Failure equates to a not insignificant fine.

If you look it up there are loads of complaints about how tight the limit is and it's commonly perceived as a cash cow for TFl. I wonder with more EVs they will have to consider adjusting that weight limit.

It's not impossible to pass the 2ton limit with a full passenger load.

I guess Tower Bridge it is then for now.

TFL say that limit is for Goods Vehicles only:

Rotherhithe Tunnel restrictions

London road user charging

Vehicles over a certain size are not allowed in the Rotherhithe Tunnel. Cameras enforce these restrictions around the clock.
Vehicles are not safe to travel through the Rotherhithe Tunnel if they are:
  • More than 2 metres (6.5 feet) high OR
  • More than 2 metres (6.5 feet) wide OR
  • Goods vehicles weighing more than 2 tonnes gross vehicle weight (GVW)
