MG4 Granny Charge versus Public Charge Until Wallbox Installed

Had my Ohme ePod installed by Octopus today. I have my meters on the outside of the garage wall but chose to put the chargepoint inside the garage, having checked the cable could pass under the garage door ok. I was surprised that the RCD was installed in separate box next to the outside meters rather than inside. The box is quite deep and projects into the side passageway somewhat. The installer did a tidy job and demonstrated charging at 6.6 Kw before leaving. I need to look into changing my tariff now.
I have the Ohme home pro, Intelligent Octapus Go made a lot of sense to me. We have 2 EVs so schedule charge overnight and never pay more than 7p per kWh for the charging, we have also time shifted our washing machine, dishwasher and dryer as siteguru mentioned. Our electricity bill has actually come down even after charging our cars.

Obviously it depends on your requirements but this worked really well for us.

How often do you need to charge? How many kWh are you typically adding when you charge?

And the $64k question ... are you prepared to time-shift other heavy usage (washing machine, dishwasher, tumble dryer) to the overnight period?
Time shifting isn't as important as it was 18 months ago, the day rate is so close to the normal price cap rate that there is not a huge difference.
Obviously if you are on a fix the day rate may be cheaper again.

Not sure if I'm reading this correctly, but I pay 25p per kWh in the day and 7p per kWh from 23:30 to 05:30, that's less than a quarter of the price.

If the peak rate is closer to the price cap rate then (as said above) the decision to choose a time-of-day tariff becomes easier to make. It's still worth doing the sums though. For me I don't do enough charging to warrant going for such a tariff, as most of our usage is during the day. (We're both retired and at home).

I think you have misunderstood or I have Im sure they were chatting about the price of an EV tariff during the day compared to the normal variable rate and charging at the variable rate as opposed to getting an EV tariff.
Obviously if you want to stick washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers on after half eleven at night you are going to save money.
I'd rather not go to bed with them on

I would rather sleep. For me a cheap overnight tariff enables moving to a heat pump for the house and accelerates the move to being a two EV household.

Agree we are a two ev household and are hoping to go down the solar, battery and heat pump route but that will be in the house after this one, looking to potentially down size in the next year or so

I'm finding timeshifting the washing machine quite convenient. Tomorrow has a good weather forecast. I'm going to get ready for bed shortly and put on a dressing gown. This way I can sort the laundry and put it into the washing machine ready to press start at 11.30 just as I go to bed. Then in the morning it's ready to hang on the line to get the best of the sunshine - such as it is in October.

I always had a tendency to put on the dishwasher before going to bed so that works too.

But bear in mind that if you have a home battery as well you can use these appliances during the day with the power you stored in the battery at the cheap rate.

These are good points. I think the issue for me is that I go to bed early and get up early so I don't usually see 11PM. Although I do sleep badly and could go down in the middle of the night and put things on then although I wouldn't plan on sleeping badly but it does happen most nights.

I just delay start all the devices, I don't wait until 23:30 to put them on :D

We went straight from 2 ICE to 2 EVs and charging them scheduled overnight makes them very cheap to run. We don't have to charge them both every night so I guess it depends on your needs but for us it was a no trainer.

Don't like trainers, then Charles? ???
