Hi all. Picked up my MG4 Excite 51 today from Victoria Park, Perth.
FYI the XPower model arrived there today too, and I watched them move it into their garage.

We picked up a diamond red 64 Essence in Bris on Friday. Loved it until this morning when the airbag light came on and didnt go away. Dealer hasn’t been super helpful so far and told us to call roadside assist who just sent us back to the dealer. We now have to wait until the 8th Nov to take it in, for them to look at it. I hope it’s some sort of update fix but by the looks of o/s threads I’m not getting my hopes up….

I think you've solved it! I didn't think to look at the pins because the car specs say 11kW 3 phase capable

Definitely no pins in L2 and L3. I will call my MG media contact to find out why ... Has the spec changed or maybe this car got a single phase socket by mistake
Which exact model do you have? I've a feeling that of the Phase 2 cars only the Extended Range supports 3-phase charging. The MG Aus website should confirm. (I can't check as any link to mgmotor.com.au is giving me 403 Forbidden). ?‍♂️

Got my Essence Long Range in Camden Grey arriving any day now. It's with the dealers and has just had the coating, window shading and Dash Cam all fitted. I'm assuming it's just the Rego and final paperwork to do now. It's from Tynan MG in Sutherland.

MG4 Essence Long Range has 11kW charging but you will have to have 3 Phase power at your property if you want a suitable charger installed. I only have single Phase so have had a 7kW charger fixed to my home.

For an airbag fault 2 days in I would just be taking it to them today.

In terms of service experience, it’s obviously dealer dependent, but ours has a faulty heater. And the repair experience hasn’t been too bad.

A heater isn’t critical, so they initially looked at it after 3 weeks, MG Australia wanted more diagnostics. So they did that and then had to get approval from MG to do the warranty repair.

It’s annoying, but they seem to be handling it almost as well as any other brands have in the past. I also asked for an EV as the loan car so have a ZS for the period.

Perhaps this was an early release model used for media reviews and it was missing the full spec? I noted in some reviews the infotainment system and reversing camera wasn't fully functioning in the car provided by MG Australia for reviews.

As you can see in my Avatar, I’ve joined Team Orange on the 2/10/23. Just walked into McGrath MG in Belconnen (Canberra) and drove away, no ordering or anything, plus they had others. Mines an MG4 Excite 64 and I’m very happy with it. Home charging off solar at and plenty of free fast chargers about have made my first 1500km all but free ($13 so far). Great handling, plenty of zip and very quiet.
Ingest trip so far was 540kms and charged twice while had a coffee.
No issues to report…it’s currently sitting at an airport for 5 weeks while I’m O/S, be interesting how that plays out when I get back.
Edit: Turning circle is like a ride on lawnmower, no issues with the auto lane control, just concentrate on the road!
Apple CarPlay is great, use Waze, not Maps. Not upgrading the sound system as it suits my level of hearing loss perfectly.
Didn’t do the Ceramic coating thing, although was pushed hard. Tinting is a must I think on windows.
Congrats, Here in Victoria for base model told me there is a 3-6 week wait time depending on colour I am still thinking about ordering but will probably order early next year.

My Essence 64 has only single phase charging. I just checked. No pins in L3 & L4. It doesn't bother me as I only have single phase at home but I thought it had 3 phase capability. A quick check of the specs shows only the 77kWH long range version has 3 phase charging capability

You have probably just been unlucky to get one with a faulty sensor. There are dozens of sensors on a modern car and they do fail. Our SES Mercedes Sprinter has had 2 engine sensors replaced one rear wheel speed sensor and a transmission sensor of some description. It has only done 14,000 kM.

In case anyone is wondering, the MG4 manual is not available as a PDF file to download. I downloaded the UK manual but it is for the original version. I got on to MG Australia and they are going to source the pdf of the manual for me. I'll let you know when it is available or put the pdf on this site if they don't put it on theirs.

EDIT: Mystery solved. MG had accidentally lent me a pre production MG4 77 long range that didn't have production spec parts

Has anyone with an Aussie long range 77 managed to get 3 phase 11kW AC charging speed?

Earlier today I was at a public charging location that supports 3 phase 22kW according to Plugshare and my media loan review MG4 77 was only accepting @ 7kW rate. AC rate was set to max in car settings

I tried 3 out of the 4 bays and these all charged at the same rate appx 7kW. A Tesla was in the 4th bay charging at 11kW :(

In case anyone is wondering, the MG4 manual is not available as a PDF file to download.

It's in the MG app. From the main menu, choose "My Profile" and "Manual" is towards the bottom.

Owner manual, navigation manual and the service portfolio. Open it there and you can share it to any app on your phone or share it to your computer.

They said even if I were to go in today, they can’t look at it until the 8th.
I don’t want to cause delays for other people who have booked work in, but someone to talk through some options with would be handy ?
We were also told not to drive it so I’m trying to understand from them how they want us to get it there if they are telling us not to drive it. Still waiting for someone to call me back or email me. Watch this space…

I’m hoping it’s something simple

I can share the phone screen with my TV via Miracast but not with my computer and I can also transfer files between phone & computer but the manual is not in a format in the app that allows this. My phone is a few years old. I'll wait till they have the manual in pdf format.

I had a hunt through the Android directory on my phone and searched for MG files but found nothing, then I thought what if I put SAIC in and voila there they were. Unfortunately too big to upload here. The Navigation manual, Service manual & Owners manual are all there as Australian versions in pdf format.

Glad you worked it out. I’m not familiar with Android, it must be slightly different.

On iPhone it opens in the MG app as a pdf with a button to share/send the pdf wherever you want it.

Hi everyone - new NSW member here - I'm taking delivery of an MG4 Excite 51 in the not too distant future and I had a question before it gets here. I have a 15 amp plug situated right where it's going to be parked and I can find some 15 amp CCS2 cables online - is the MG4 going to slow charge at a faster rate on a 15amp plug or am I going to find that it's exactly the same as the 10amp cable that comes with it?

Googling has shown that at least some EVs will charge faster in a 15amp socket with the appropriate 15amp cable but I can't find anything MG4 specific on this forum or on Google.

There is nothing special about MG4, if you have a 15A socket and a cable delivering 15A then it should charge faster than the standard 10A lead that comes with the car. If you check forums there are some people doing this with their caravan outlets.

I believe the issue lies in the granny charger supplied with the car. I haven't taken delivery of my MG4 yet so I don't have first hand experience, but from my research the granny charger has a hardwired 10A plug and will signal the car accordingly.

This is different to the Tesla granny charger which has an interchangable plug. Swapping the supply end plug on the Tesla granny charger actually results in the charger indicating to the car that it's now 15A capable.

Excellent - thanks.

The 15amp cables I can find online are $275-345 or so (just domestic stuff, excluding anything seen on Ali Express etc) which doesn't seem too painful a hit to the wallet for 50% more granny charging speed. Interesting re: Teslas - the interchangeable plug would be handy on a stock cable...

So long as the cable and power supply can deliver 15 amps on a 230 V supply (3.45 kW) that is what the top charging speed will be. The car will charge at a maximum 6.6kW from an AC EVSE supply. My wall EVSE can deliver 7.4kW but the car only accepts 6.6kW. The charger is in the car and it determines the rate.

Excellent - thanks.

The question is "what" are you plugging into the 15A wall socket?
If you're looking at a 15A "Type 2 to Type 2" cable (aka "BYO cable") you still need to plug it into something (a wall box or similar).
That's where the granny charger point comes in with my earlier comment.

Also be very careful with AliExpress products. Just because they claim 15A doesn't mean you should pull 15A from them. The copper cross section/gauge of cables is critically important, otherwise you risk heating up the cables and making your forum name literal :)

It's the same problem with extension cables, even compliant ones purchased locally from a reputable source. You might be able to pull 10A from them, but the voltage drop (and heat generation) can pose risks with high current demands. Eg my air compressor specifically states not to operate it with an extension cord. Voltage drop due to crappy copper cables is the primary reason why.
Don't underestimate how much strain charging an EV places on your equipment. It's a substantial amount of current for a substantial duration.
