MG4 Restricted speed - weird

Tried sport mode on the way home.
Same result, over a ‘certain speed’ the power meter tumbles down from 100% to around 56% and the car just stops at that speed.

I have the exact same issue.

I live in Portugal and we use KM/h here

On my way to work there is a highway merger right at the bottom of a hill.
Since I have an EV e just go to the fast lane and floor it.

Done this with my 2011 Nissan Leaf in the last 10 years ...

First tim on my MG4 Standard (50KWh LFP battery) it goes until 101 km/h really hard and suddenly stops form accelerating! Seams like someone was pulling the car backwards.

i went to the manual and it says to use sport mode on mountain roads.
So next day, some issue but at a different speed.
i found a video from Bjorn in Thailand with a MG4 LFP doing a mountain pass and he got the same result.

I think this is related to some kind protection mode (Batt or engine temp) because it always at different speeds.

In the manual page 320 i found that the advertised power of the car is in fact max power. The car has Continuous Power 54 KW / Maximum power125 KW.

So it seams instead of 170hp we get 73 hp rigth when you need them.

I have an electric moped and it's always showing eng/batt/inverter temperature so you know when you will hit a max temp and power reduced.

i just wonder if this is the case here, or do I have a faulty unit.
Are you guys seeing this behavier in NCM(64KWh) and LFP (50KWh) models? or just LFP?

Interesting, thanks for the info.
This is why I’m going for a refund and not a replacement car.
I think all SR cars have this issue just waiting to surface.
So what’s the point of another one.

It capped the speed of the car? Were you eventually able to get past 101km/h ?

Capped.

On the next, less steep hill, I tested and it was around 105 but some behaviour.
Next day, same issue but always at different speeds.
If I don't floor it I don't have the issue, at least on that hill that is relatively short.

But @bowfer tested uphill, downhill, flat etc.

Yes, under certain circumstances the car will limit your top speed and there’s nothing you can do.
He’s had 101kmh which is 63mph.
I’ve had exactly the same several times.
Foot to the floor, 63mph.

That could get you killed if you were attempting to join a fast moving motorway.

No it won't. There are plenty of slower vehicles and 60mph is the limit for various classes on a motorway - e.g. towing.

Definitely sounds more and more like a generic characteristic or bug that is triggering for multiple people. This number though should help MG to home in on the cause.

I honestly admire you optimism re MG honing in on this issue when their attention is barely on the gearbox solution but ?

Honestly though, it is easy to be pessimistic about what they are doing but there have been attempts to fix the oil leak, lock-in bug and the software seems to be improving in latest releases. None of that would be happening if they truly didn't care.

Somewhere in the code will be the 101kph/63mph limit, it should be easy for MG to figure out the conditions in which it is applied.

I agree it's just the visibility/timescales/communication that let's them down. Acknowledge it, publish bulletins and give estimated timescales to improve and we would sit back happily. It's all a byproduct of the customer service attitude I suppose

Partly I think it is the Chinese culture, work to fix the problems behind the scenes but don't admit to them publicly.

Tonight, 40% battery, mine decided to give me 100% power to 71/72mph and that was it.
Stopped there, power meter went down to 38% and that was that.
On video again, piling up evidence in case the request for a refund goes nasty/legal.

You lot are the MG detectives, diagnostic team engineer's and customers service.

There is more help for all those subjects on this forum than there is if you contact MG and most dealers.

To be fair the bar is set quite low to begin with?

Having looked over the specifications of the motors the ratings are:

SR 54kW constant / 125kW peak
LR 68kW constant / 150kW peak

If we assume that what is happening is the motor has hit its peak output threshold and is dropping back to its constant rating this equates to:

SR: 43.2% power output
LR: 45.3% power output

Which isn't a million miles away from @bowfer reports of 38% so the question is... Is this a sensor fault causing the motor to believe it's overworking or not?

How could you possibly comment on whether MG know or not?
If they do know, what would you expect them to do, openly admit it?
Like they begrudgingly and lethargically reacted to people being locked in their cars?
