Hi all,

I've been playing about with an OBD2 dongle and checking out some work done by the guys over at MG Discourse

And off the back of that I've managed to get the necessary live data together for ABetterRoutePlanner. If you haven't heard of it, it's a navigation app designed to plot your route including charging stops and with this live data added, you'll be able to adjust your trip on the fly based on battery level.

All you'll need is a bluetooth EML327 OBD2 reader and a phone with the Torque Pro app.

They are also working on getting an Android Auto app setup, which when they do means we'll have a really simple long distance journey experience.

Hope you all find this useful :)

So will this stream the car’s live data via bluetooth and populate the ABRP app?

To use this app via Apple Car Play or Android Auto you need to pay £4.99 per month; it’s great for Europe, but not really needed for the UK at that price.

@Cocijo Yes it will stream live data, just need to setup the necessary web upload setting in torque.

@Mark Holmes - I agree and I'm not sure If I'll pay for premium. With my phone connected, the passenger can just push the latest nav from ABRP to google maps and get it on Android Auto. Also there are some other features like taking into consideration live carger statuses and weather. So it's not just the one feature. I'm half thinking of subscribing to support their work even if I'm not necessarily going to get that much value out of it.

Also a side bonus from this, I get the local logs from the Torque app uploaded to my Home Automation System. So my house knows how charged the car is and so how much it needs charging overnight. I'm on Octopus Agile (30min tarrif based on wholesale prices) so it then chooses the cheapest time to charge :) I've averaged around 7p per kWh since I set it up

Can you set the % that you want the battery charged to?

Yeah, I have it set to charge to a maximum of 80% unless I tell it to charge to full. It has to guess based on the energy used by the charger & the last known state of charge but it's pretty accurate.

Ok - so it doesn’t actually use the realtime battery % data. So on Octopus go tariff it’s currently 5p/kw between 12.30am and 4.30am

Yeah I know, Agile is more expensive at night at the moment because it's winter. The prices are lower through summer. Often going negative.
