Could anyone please advise the best/economical place to procure a charging cable for my MG5 to a rapid charging station such as the ones found in supermarkets.
I didn’t realise that one isn’t included and evidently Halfords don’t sell them.
Thanks in anticipation

Hi, you don't need a type2 32A cable for a Rapid charger only for at home if you have an untethered EVSE or destination 7kW Type2 EVSE (charge points).
Check out Screwfix.

All rapid chargers i.e. 50kW and up are DC with a CCS plug come with tethered cables with a large plug on the end with DC connections, they may also have a type 2 socket on the charger, but this is limited to what the car will take, in the case of the ZS that is 6.8 kW. The ones that are type 2 only are called destination chargers and can be up to 43 kW but you need a specific 3 phase AC charger fitted to your car. Only the ZOE has this to my knowledge.

I am totally confused. As I understand it the MG5 is fitted with a type 2 connector which is located directly beneath the connection that I use for my Ohmi home charger. I just need a cable to connect from the type 2 port (if indeed it is a type 2) on the MG5 to a typical charging station found on a motorway and supermarkets for instance.
My obvious course of action is to go to an MG dealership to ascertain what I need and purchase from them. But I may well to be able to,purchase the same thing and same quality from an outside source for less of a cost. Either way it’s going to be made in China 😂
Thank you.

This is the cable you need.

Have you been to a rapid charger?
The two lower pins under the type2 socket are for DC input and form part of the CCS connector used for rapid chargers. Just the top type2 is used at home or AC charging.

Hi
thanks for your reply. Yes I did go to a rapid charger only to realise the car wasn’t supplied with a suitable cable to connect. I didn’t actually look at the connection at the charging point, I believe it had a protective flap over it.
I now understand the description given to the charging ports on the car, I didn’t realise the cable for a public charger occupied both the ports available on the car.
However in view of how many people with MG5s must use public chargers at some stage and therefore purchased a cable am very surprised that someone hasn’t been able to pass on there acquisition experience. Not complaining, just considered it a simple straightforward question that most all new MG 5 owners would need to know and have experience in.
Thanks again.

If you want to use a fast charger (DC and generally 50kw or higher) you won't need a cable. As others have said the cable is part of the charger. If you want to use a destination charger (AC and generally 7.2 KW in UK) you will need the type of cable Superal suggests

I wonder if the confusion is that what you saw was not a "rapid charger" as you describe, but a slow charger instead

If it is a rapid charger there will be a cable, not just a socket.

... unless some vandal has chopped the cable off, as reported in this thread...

I have never seen a rapid charger without a cable. They do however have an AC type 2 connection on the side but that a fast EVSE and normally that does need a cable. Did you take any pictures of the issue?

Okay the penny has dropped.
The type 2 cable is to connect to a public charger delivering 7.5 kw the same as my home charger so about 6 hours for a full charge.
Whereas the fast charging public stations delivering 50 kw and over have the cable attached and can complete a charge in about an hour.
For information the local MG dealership quoted £236.00 for a type 2 cable to connect to a public 7.5 kw charger.
Thanks to anyone who tried to explain
Got there in the end, I think.

The terminology is confusing when new to EV’s

Fast is very slow(ish) and Rapid is slow very fast!!
FTFY ;) (from someone looking at EVs and comparing 'fill-up' times to an ICE) :(

But I'd add that ultra-rapid would be acceptable.

@Everest

Compared to ICE fuelling, you are right! However, I have had to use a public charger less than a handful of times over the 2 years I have had my car, and ‘filling’ my battery at home, overnight, takes no time at all, (and currently only 5p per kWh).

The times I have topped up at a public charger on a long journey, I needed to stop anyway, for food, coffee and the loo.

For me, it just works. I wouldn’t go back to ICE.

(y) that's where I suspect I'll do my charging when I make the shift. 5p/kWh sounds very good - is that from Octopus?

No, I was with Octopus, which I think is currently 8p - still great, especially if you can load shift dishwasher/washing machine etc., to take advantage.

I am now with Tomato Energy, which is an electricity only supplier.
There are also a couple of 60/90 minute periods where the charge is around 13.5p per kWh.

Tempted by Tomato, but electricity only and the fact they are relatively new to the market is putting me off.

The solar panel deal smells a bit off to me as well.

I'm holding out for now to see if they are stable and to watch if Octopus tweak their Go offer a bit to compete.
