New cars stressful ??

I think that we're all in the same situation in the UK, don't think I've seen the roads in a worse state in the decades I've lived up here.
The irony is that it's the same fekking potholes year after year after year because the local council won't ( or can't ) spend the money to repair them properly.

Cut round the perimeter till you reach solid asphalt, lay the fresh stuff and compact it properly, finally, seal the join with liquid tar to prevent water ingress and early failure - is what they NEVER do.

That would involve setting up traffic lights and all sorts of expense so what we get instead is a couple of geezers with a couple of shovels chucking some asphalt from the back of a pickup and calling it done, utter waste of time.

We'll be doing just that from next year, look forward to the holes being quickly and expertly repaired from then on

Feels like we don't get much in return for the council tax as it is though, a reasonable surface to drive on without the fear of my suspension getting torn off doesn't seem like too much to expect ?

Getting back on topic, this is just the second new car I've ever bought, and I think it may well be my final.
I totally forgot the stress I felt with the last one with the stone chips, the parking dents, my kids opening doors against the garage wall, the first damaged alloy - definitely not my wife .

Now my MG4 is 15 months old I've kinda got over it and no longer look at the marks but I sort of wish that I'd just waited until around now, bought a lightly used one and saved a packet.

It is nice being able to choose your colour though

I think I can push it 'til '26 on the ved front ( March renewal), so I'll expect potholes til then at the very least {ahem}.

This is my first new car although I did have a new company car every 2-3 years for about 15 years in my 30/40s. That certainly helped me get over being ( justifiably) too precious about them. Was involved in a crash ( 100% my favour) a week after taking delivery of one that required a bit more than t-cut... not even duct tape would suffice. After that I just see them as tools to get from A-Z via C,D, etc, although obviously different when you haven't paid for it and someone else covers repairs costs.
My last car was an ex-demo Kia Soul EV which magically had 4 noticeable scratches turn up a week or two after I bought it around the drivers door handle(ish). I'm convinced the dealer had just done a temporary cover-up prior to selling it. No other scratches ever turned up in 4 years of ownership.

Anyone else find owning a new car stressful ? So far I’ve had a few things that make me wonder if it’s worth the hassle ?

• Stone chip on the front bumper after 2 weeks
• Stone hit the bonnet 1st causing a small dent then chipped the window screen
• Parking dent from the golf club and I even have door dent protectors and park as far away from others as possible.

All first world problems I know, dents are being fixed next week but I just feel unlucky, I’ve only had the car for 6 wks.

Yep, the first few stone chips/windscreen chips and even worse dings/dents ?are always the worst on a brand new car. Like you I've suffered a few minor paint chips and the worst being a windscreen chip that frightened the life out of me at the time due to the noise it made. I'm just thankful it was a repairable chip on the passenger side and that no cracks appeared to require a new windscreen.

Brings back memories of my dad.

He would never buy a new car especially if it was a new model to the market. He always said he would give it 2-3 years & let any potential issues be ironed out.

He was never interested in mobile phones, computers so not sure how he would of got on with today’s cars, especially EVs with having to use the screen to change settings etc

They need an MG technician from the dealership to come by with their laptop. They need special equipment/software, which I'm told they are waiting on

I ended up with a cracked windscreen last week on my SE, had the car since mid January so was gutted. We contacted the insurance and they said they'd sort out a new one and from calling them to getting it fitted was 9 days. It came from MG with all the camera and mirror fitting applied so all that came off the old one and simply clicked back into place when he'd fitted the new screen, no calibration needed and all works as it did. Only took the guy about 2 hours to do it.

Luckily I had seen him, so by the time I hit him I was doing around 5 miles an hour, the little thing walked away unscathed and my car survived with only a tiny, tiny mark on the front black splitter.

My last car was an ex-demo Kia Soul EV which magically had 4 noticeable scratches turn up a week or two after I bought it around the drivers door handle(ish). I'm convinced the dealer had just done a temporary cover-up prior to selling it. No other scratches ever turned up in 4 years of ownership.

That'll be Autoglym Super Resin Polish (probably)

Miracle Elixir for hiding light scratches.

Disappears after a couple of washes hence the scratches becoming noticeable again.
Remedy? More SRP!

I've got loads of it.

Main thing buddy is the you & the deer are ok & your car is fine.

Depending how deep a scratch/mark is on a cars plastic I always find this particular Turtle Wax ceramic spray really good for getting off stubborn marks + about every 4-6 months I give the plastics a coat of it after washing the car.

Gives plastic an excellent repellent, dark clean look & just makes cleaning a lot easier ( can be used on bodywork, glass as well if you wish )

Never park close to another car that has a baby seat in it. Invariably the 'doting mother' throws the door wide open to insert her boiled sprat dingng your car in the process.

Also young children have no concept of opening car doors carefully.

Has anyone else’s new car been in the wars ?

YES!

Very very first brand new car was a Vauxhall Zafria (Long time ago) - 3 days old it was and came back to it in the car park to find the driver wing mirror smashed.

Then a VW Touran that was 1 week old to find the front passenger door caved in when we had parked in a car park, luckily there was CCTV so was able to claim on his insurance.

Then Nissan Note, 1 day old and we went to IKEA in Birmingham, parked quite away from the store but cam back to find someone had scrapped their trolley down the side of the car. Again there was CCTV so was able to claim on their insurance.

Then finally we got a Skoda Yeti 4x4, then on the way from the dealer some guy on a motorbike decided to overtake a car at a junction because he could not be bothered to wait for the car to move, so overtook and pulled out right into us head on, had it on dashcam and was able to claim on his insurance

I have had the MG4 now for a month and thankfully no one has hit us yet etc. I am hoping it says this way!!!

Just life mate, I had a car once that must have been magnetic as it was dinged half a dozen times in car parks and I had two on road accidents not my fault, second accident wrote it off, was sad and glad at the same time.

Road Tax was abolished in 1937. Vehicle Tax on the other hand.......

Dents? oh yes our local Morrisons car park gave me a nice scratch across my bumper where I can only assume someone without sensors reversed down the side of my car taking paint with it. My car is bright blue, anyone should be able to see it. I'd not even parked that close to anyone either so very annoying. They knew they had done it too as they rubbed off the mud to check if they'd scratched it and drove off. Nice. My husband had a new car and in the first 2 weeks it had 3 dents inflicted by others, very annoying.

Picked my new car up at 10:30. At 11:00, I was driving through Cookham High Street, which is notoriously narrow, with sharp granite kerbs either side - a Transit moved out to pass a parked car, and our door mirrors touched ?. Got home, my plumber turned up to service my boiler - he finished, then backed his van into my (NEW!) car, bending the front number plate ??? So, in just a couple of hours, my shiny new car is a total wreck ?

If I have a choice, I park next to newer looking cars. Bonus if they are a luxury brand. It's obviously not guaranteed but you'd think the owners of those cars will at least be careful going in and out of their car, and have enough sensors/cameras to not bump into yours.

Avoid at all cost parking next to any cars that have sticky tapes holding the car together, or cars that are badly parked in the first place.
