Hi all

Newbie questions please be gentle

I’m looking to buy a generation 1 mg zs ev (2020) but just trying to understand a few things..

Is there a Uk app in which you can heat/cool the car and control the charging?

How do you set the car to charge to 80% with the granny charger?

And how to set the car to charge to 80% with a wall home charge? ( I’m looking to get the ohme pro installed)

Are the ohme pro compatible with the mg zs ev?

Any advice on what to check/ looking for when buying secondhand?

Thanks in advance

Simon

There is no app with MK1 unfortunately.

Not sure if the ohm charger has scheduled options...

If I were you I'd look at other options over the MK1 ZS. A 2020 Hyundai Ioniq 38kWh can probably be had for similar money, has a much better infotainment system, better real world range and a heat pump which means winter range is excellent.

Hi Simon, I was in your shoes in March/April. I first decided on MG as transitional EV to whatever comes next...
I was keen on new MG4, that then changed onto second-hand MG5 1st generation. Went to dealers and decided MG ZS was most comfortable solution for my family. Price difference between Mk1 (£10k average) and Mk2 (£15K) was enough to make me go for Mk2 - longer range, at least £1K more in "extras" that I would pay for - including phone app + depreciation - I was likely to sell Mk2 for a few thousand extra when time comes ...

so, I would go for Mk2 2022 if I were you. There should be more and more available as company leases end after 2-3 years ...

Charging - no rush. You should get 3-pin charger with the car - I haven't got one but bought one on Amazon for £120 - perfect - it comes with a phone app where you can set everything up. Don't rush and buy home charger before the car. I'm still using 3-pin charger now on cheap 5 hour tariff from BG and works fine for me. It gives me about 30% charge in those 5 hours - about 70 miles top-up. (8p per kWh).

When buying second hand, MG dealers are a safe option as you can twist their arm to update everything on the car before you pay. I bought mine from a different dealer network as the deal was too good to miss...
However - buying from a random garage that mainly sells part-exchange petrol/diesels - I would not recommend it as they will just not be able to sort anything out for you after the sale ... unless you agree with them that they pay any updates/repairs via MG garage (in writing !!!)

Servicing every year is a must for warranty so make sure there is 1 service every year regardless of mileage.

any other questions?

Thank you for this I have looked at the id3 but not sure on boot space!

Thank you for this a mk2 is over budget for me at the moment. Did you not like the Mg5?

Can you scheduled the car via the granny charger?
The luggage space in the Ioniq we found to be better shaped than the ZS - it's longer and wider but shallower. The ZS is deep but not very long at all, which means you often resort to folding the seats down.

The granny charger itself contains no in built scheduler.

The Ioniq 38kwh on the other hand has scheduling from an app and from the car itself ?

I was fairly set on Mk1 MG5 for money/value, boot space and long range battery but once Mk2 ZS Trophy with sunroof popped up, I went to local MG dealers and just sat in all 3 models for ages comparing how they feel. Overall, Mk2 ZS was nicer + more features and it was only about £2,000 more than Mk1 MG5 or Mk1 ZS + likely to be better value part-exchange when time comes...
If you want to spend as little as possible (as I was also planning to do at first), money for value, I would probably go for Exclusive MG5 Mk1 Long Range (in white ?) with about 40k on the clock - BUT - don't assume Mk2 ZS or MG5 is out of reach ... there are some around £15k with about 35k on teh clock, 2 years old ...

p s. on my £120 3-pin charger, I can setup schedule for charging as well as few other bits and you can also use MG iSmart app to start and stop charging if your MG model supports that app

Ok great thanks so much for the information

What sort of range are you getting from
the Ioniq?
I was getting 190 miles in the summer, 175 in the winter.

I now have an SR ZS which on paper has more range, in real life it has less, especially in winter.

I have a 2020 Mk1 Exclusive model and think it’s just great as a local run around car. This was bought with just 12000 miles on the clock on a finance deal which after £3k down costs me less that £109 per month over three years. Price was about £12,750 a few months ago which is a lot of car for the money. Have had a few “higher end” company cars before and there is not a lot missing from this model unless you want all the apps and gizmo’s. (climate control is a slight miss but not a deal breaker). For me first time I’ve ever bought a car on finance but such is the risk of depreciation due to emerging battery tech and the relatively low mileage range versus new entrants I would far rather the finance company took the risk on depreciation over the three years than me. Plan is to hand it back after the three years. Love the big sun roof albeit could do with tinted windows in this heat! - note to self - tinting.

Agree with others here that a MK2 much better option. In case you didn’t know there is a standard range and a long range variant. Standard range will do about 180miles real world where long range more like 250miles. Standard range should be more than adequate and should be a fair bit cheaper. Worth going for one with a sunroof too. Makes the car really stand out IMO.
