Hi everyone,

I'm new to electric vehicles and having trouble getting my scheduled charging to work overnight on my Ohme Pro charger. In the app, there seems to be two entirely separate places to schedule, and these can be set to different times. On the main app homepage, I can select 'change target'and in the burger menu, if I select 'my charger', I can set a schedule too. I tried setting both to charge to 75% by 5:30am in the morning, the one in the burger menu starts the same but the main homepage one automatically changes to something else. Both are set to only charge at off peak prices (I'm on intelligent octopus, giving cheaper electricity between 11:30pm and 5pm.).

The charging doesn't seem to start as scheduled. Tonight, I unlocked then locked my car, and the charging started.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks,

David.

I tried this last night and it started charging immediately at peak rate when I disabled cheap tariff. I assume because it was assuming the car had an empty battery as it cannot see the battery charge state. When I enabled the cheap tariff, it worked correctly and only charged during the cheap time.
Strange as obviously the octopus page says otherwise, as long as it works

I've sent an email to Ohme to see if they can clarify the behaviour for the MG4 and intelligent octopus.

Sorry to be an arse but your Megane is different, so I'm not sure your experience is helpful.

From here: Charging without API support

Choosing the correct type of schedule for your car

All electric cars can smart charge with Ohme, but some provide access to the battery state of charge which allows for more precise charging. To ensure you get the most out of Ohme, make sure you choose the correct type of schedule for your car.

Some car manufacturers provide an API (Application Programming Interface) which allows access to information about your car via your manufacturer’s smartphone app. Providing your login details in the Ohme app allows Ohme to see your car's current state of charge, which is then used to work out how much charge you need.

Precise charging support is an Ohme Labs feature and is currently available for the following manufacturers:

  • BMW
  • Hyundai
  • Jaguar
  • Land Rover
  • Kia
  • Nissan
  • Renault
  • Tesla
  • MINI

I think the difference is, your car data can be seen by the Ohme whereas the MG4 data (battery charge State) cannot. Oh and it has a rear wiper. ?

Well I have misunderstood Intelligent Octopus. Sorry If I've mislead anyone.

TLDR: If you're using a schedule in the Ohme app and it says "smart charging" at the top of the home screen, you'll be charging at the lower rate regardless of time of day.

Ohme support got back to me with some links and an explanation.

"Intelligent Octopus is a smart time-of-use tariff with peak and off-peak pricing. Customers benefit from a low price night rate for their EV and home energy use of 10p/kWh between 11:30pm and 5:30am. Outside these hours your unit rate will vary by region.

Intelligent Octopus is a variable tariff, which means that the price you pay can rise and fall with the cost of wholesale energy. We'll always give you reasonable notice of any changes to the pricing of flexible tariffs.

To find Intelligent Octopus rates for your area, go to this page.

When we schedule your charging, you’ll always benefit from the low 10p/kWh for both EV and home, even if we ask your car to charge outside of the standard night hours. If you need to charge more urgently you can trigger a Bump Charge, which is billed at your normal unit rate."

Intelligent Octopus x Ohme

We're still in the early stages of this project so there's a few important things to note upfront.
  • You'll need to use the Ohme app to control your charging; after you've signed up we'll disable the Intelligent Octopus app.
  • The Ohme app’s price cap should be turned off, or it needs to be set above your peak unit rate. If it's set below this, your smart charging schedules won't be as smart as they could be.
  • While you can have multiple charging schedules in the Ohme app, we suggest only having one active schedule; Intelligent Octopus will do the hard work in the background.
  • You need to set an active schedule in the Ohme app for the time you want your EV charged by, ideally between 4am - 11am. If you don't do this, the Ohme charger will default to 'dumb' charging and you'll be paying a higher rate to charge your EV.
  • To override smart charging, you'll need to go into the active schedule in your Ohme app and toggle max charging to ON. This will probably cost you more, but get your car charged sooner.

Your welcome ?
Leni16, does ohme accurately predict the price of your charge? And the price per mile?

My ohme app predicts a more expensive charge and higher pence per mile when I let it "intelligent charge" and disable the price cap. But if it's intelligent charging it should still be at the lower rate? So price should be the same.
With price cap enabled it is about 2.38p/m but with it disabled it gets up to 4.33.
Which is contrary to the FAQ and email assurances!

To be perfectly honest I haven't paid much attention to it, the last charge I put in was 28kw think it was £3 something

If you set a schedule and then override it on the main screen with Change Target, that only persists for the current charging session, after which it reverts to the schedule. If you disconnect the charger or otherwise interrupt it, it will cancel the override and revert to the schedule.

Don't think of the target as the % to charge to, but the % to add. So, if you're at 60% battery and want to charge to 80%, set it to charge to 20%. Don't set a schedule in the car, but do set the charge limit, I.e. to 80%.

I'm on OVO so things might be different, but if I set mine to add 220 miles (80%) by 6AM and plugged in at 9PM it'd likely Starr charging at full whack immediately because it thinks it needs to charge 50 KW and then cut out when the car turns off the charge when it hits 80%. But if the car's at 60% and I set it to add 20% by 6AM it'll wait and then charge at a lower rate for longer.

Don't worry. It all makes sense in the end!
