Paint peeling off bumper

I've recently spotted paint peeling off the front bumper. One patch near the headlight is pretty obvious, the other is a little more subtle and linear in nature. I wonder if anyone else has noticed this? I'd welcome opinions as to the likely best remedy to ask for ie would a dealer be able to touch up to completely repair?

Many thanks

There is no way that should have taken 1.5 years of your time, having to get an independent report and go all the way to the Ombudsman to resolve. Shame on you MG Richmond Guildford.

What dealer did greatly help though? They need a mention.

Waylands MG Newbury have really helped sort all this out. Even though they're not very close to where I live, I'm planning to ask them to do future services on my car

Good for you. Pleased you got it resolved. I would blame MG UK more than dealer as the photos speak for themselves. I guess MG UK are keeping a tight hold of their purse strings as I imagine profit margins are EXTREMELY low

It's taken a year and a half of arguing and ultimately the involvement of another dealership who helped greatly to sort this mess out. MGUK have promised to refund the £240 for the independent technical report I commissioned, which hopefully will be sorted shortly
I really do sympathise with your situation and the painful process it has taken to get this paint situation finally sorted !.
TBH - Like others have already said, it should never have taken this long to sort out or the need for the intervention of an independent assessment, plus the cost of this action by yourself !.
It’s really not rocket science here, if the base cost and lacquer is either prematurely chipping / peeling away from the plastic substrate, then clearly the some part of the preparation / paint process has NOT been carried out correctly.
Plastic bumper covers etc all require an additional special primer coat applying before the use of a standard primer, otherwise when the bumper flexes, the paint will simply crack and peel away.
Shocking it has taken this long for somebody to apply pure common sense.

pure common sense.
I don't think common sense had much to do with it. They didn't want to pay. They paid when omnibus man was about to force them to. I know profit margins for MG are minimal to negative but it's still disappointing/disgusting when things go wrong.

My "Common Sense" remark was clearly aimed at the whole fiasco of what should have been an easy straight forward, defective warranty paint claim.
Not sure if the first dealer was a little lethargic ( let's be kind ) in their approach to resolving your issue, or that MG C/S where dragging their feet, or likely a combination of both TBH.
Clearly the only person NOT in the wrong here, was you !.
The very slow process of sometimes getting warranty work approved by MG CS is not great and a paint claim has to be the worst case scenario, judging by your experience.
Also plain "Common Sense" dictates that customers are not in the habit of spending thousands and thousands of pounds to a car manufacture, for them to supply a brand new car and then have the paint finish just flake of it (n).
Why make it SO difficult, the law clearly dictates that they going to have to pay to correct it in the long run regardless !.
Purely for comparison, about five years ago my brother purchased a brand new Audi Q5.
Before it was delivered, he paid the dealer to carry out a full paintwork protection coating.
The car was washed for the first time two weeks later and when it was dried off, there was the outline of white circles on every single panel of the car.
At first he thought they where just white water marks, but even after polish was applied, the marks could not be removed.
He returned to the dealer who agreed there was clearly an issue with the paint finish.
The main agent blamed the coating company for incorrectly applying the product and said they would have them totally rework the car again !.
This rework just made matters worse and car was then booked into their bodyshop the following week.
They had the car for a full week and then the bodyshop manger called to say he wanted to see my brother.
He was totally honest with my brother and said "We have buffed the hell out of that car for the last two days and that is the best we can do, we have spoken to the Audi area rep and he will be here next week.
After his visit, his conclusion was that the car had been sitting in storage somewhere and some type of chemical fall out had burnt into the paint finish.
They offered to repaint the whole car, but my brother rejected the car there and then !.
Complete time line for all of the above work .................... less than 90 days !.

Complete time line for all of the above work .................... less than 90 days !.

And even that's, way to long, in my view.
But obviously comparing it, to 18 months,
which quite frankly, is totally, bloody ridiculous!!
S'pose it's good, but still not good enough.
Both those, problems, should have been sorted, in a Month, tops. 🙂👍

Thanks for your comments.

It's been a quagmire.

MG supplied a car of unsatisfactory quality.

Richmond MG Guildford laughably diagnosing stone chips.

Richmond MG Guildford wouldn't answer emails/complaints.

MGUK not admitting there was any issue for many many months.

It's not been a great experience to be fair. That said, when I get the refund for the independent report that MGUK have promised, I'll be happy enough. I won't then be out of pocket, and my car will be, as it should have been from day one...

It is of concern that MG has advertised a lengthy warranty with fish hooks and which it seems to resist honoring, generally across the board, from software updates to faulty hardware.
It would be curious to know what budget they have allowed for warranty claims?
Every manufacturer has their share of Friday afternoon/Monday morning problems and bigger the ticket the more reluctant they seeming are to rectify. But WX's experience is up there in terms of blatancy!
One would think with social media's increasing presence and the brutal competition in the EV market, making buyers repeat buyers would be a priority.
It won't take long for MG's "warranty" to lose its brand attraction if this keeps up.
Still, I really like my vehicle; just crossing my fingers it didn't slip thru QC and will give them benefit of the doubt at this stage.

That surface is corroded. That can be prevented with proper care.
  1. Bring your car to a detailing garage and ask for ceramic coating. It lasts 5-7 years.
  2. Use a ferric, insect, and calcium decontaminant on the paint every 3 months. That's the stuff that causes corrosion.
  3. When you clean the car, use car soap with a foam machine (30 bucks). This lubricates the surface of the paint. Then remove with a microfiber towel.
Of course you could just use a hose to clean your car, but that will provoke micro scratches on the paint.

Now it's corroded: You can still fix it. You can find a paint pen of your color for MG4 on aliexpress for like 10 bucks. But I would recommend you to bring your car to be machine polished + coated, as you seem to be driving in harsh conditions.

They will decontaminate it for you and add the coating, but it will be a bit more expensive than just taking care from day one.
