Parking brake and several other systems failed on startup. Sat in car, wouldn't select gear, message came up saying to turn off parking brake, did so. Car was parked on a hill. Starts rolling backwards. Parking brake renegaged after holding foot down hard on brake for 30 seconds. Gears still wouldn't select.

Highly disturbing failure. Turning it off and on again resolved all faults, but this is pretty dangerous.

After some software updates last December, the car started to show some "Auto hold" error at start up. A couple of times, had a "Parking system error" and some warnings and messages about the brake system. Couldn't engage any gear until I rebooted the car. Last May I had some new updates and never had this error again.

I haven't had those problems but it did have a software update for the braking system recently.

Things fail on ICE and EV where software is involved, if you feel it's that serious then get it to dealer or sell it.

The brakes didn't fail. The parking brake failed. Any car with an electric handbrake, ICE or EV, can have the same problem.

This is just pedantry for the sake of it. A parking brake failure not only means you cannot safely leave the vehicle, at least ICE cars can be left in gear, but is an instant MOT failure.
The car is having a service in a few weeks and this has been reported as an issue along with the usual bluetooth, DAB, LKA, and other issues.

I wouldn't call turning off the parking brake and the car rolling backwards a brake failure, or am I reading it wrong ?

You are. The parking brake couldn't be turned back on after being turned off to deal with an error message.
Ok, I missed where you said you turned it back on. ?
Personally, I ignore all or any error messages at startup and wait for everything to finish booting up before I press the brake pedal. I find the error messages all go away doing this.

The car is not in 'Ready'. Put foot on brake pedal and press start again, or power off and start again. This is usually due to lack of pressure on the brake pedal when starting.
