I am not sure if this has already been posted but it does get my goat when I want to charge my car and have to pay parking fees because the stupid charger is in a car park. If an ICE car had to pay to refuel there would be up-roar so why are we having to put up with this. To that end should the Zap map have a code that lets you know there is car parking charges involved on the map rather than having to squirrel into the chat.

We don't, at least not in my part of the world, parking is free if you are charging at all HRC car parks.

In fact I've only seen one car park that I would have to pay while charging and that is an underground shopping centre car park.

The council car parks around here that have genii run chargers all state that you are also liable for parking charges IIRC the one in Pickering last year didn't.

There are many places that I have encountered this, Bude (Cornwall), Holsworthy (Devon), Whitstable (Kent), North Walsham (Norfolk), all money grabbing leeches that don't give a fig about ripping off EV owners. Not only that, as these are 7kW chargers the carpark charges make the expensive kWh even more expensive. Oh and if your country is lucky enough to not pay name them as the carparks here often charge SHAME ON THEM, perhaps you could call them out for charging or not charging parking fees. Rant Over, for the moment!

I think charging a parking fee for 7kW chargers is fair enough. You are going to be parking there for a long time. We may see the day when significant numbers of parking spaces have 7kW chargers - which in my experience are usually cheaper than high speed chargers - they become just a fixture of the space.

Charging a parking fee for fast chargers where you are normally there for less than half a hour is another matter. Maybe make the parking free for half an hour (if charging). Fee due immediately if not charging.

I have seen EVs in our local supermarket car park (council run, and payable, but the charging spaces are free) that have plugged in and not started a change just to dodge the parking fee. Others plug into the 7kW socket so they hardly have pay anything for their hour or more parking. But they can afford to drive round in £80,000+ cars

I am talking about the 7kw chargers, not everyone is at the £80k for cars, and not everywhere has rapid chargers, and not everyone can afford a wall charger, so the only way to charge is use the 7kw destination chargers in car parks. And to be honest if you are wanting to get more people to adopt EV's, paying parking fees to charge your car is not exactly a carrot to do so.

Imagine if ICE drivers had to pay a fee to pull up at a pump. There would be anarchy.

I cant see it being unfair to be required to pay for parking while charging. Two different authorities. Although I did see another EV driver the other day getting a telling-off for thinking that charging gave him a free parking slot (he promptly made his way the the ticket machine... a lesson learnt for us all I guess.

Small country with too may cars.

Not quite a suitable analogy as ICE cars spend not a lot of time at the pump - as much or more time is spent going to the shop, paying, then coming back to the car.

I agree, a small council run car park that allocates half a dozen EV spaces with AC chargers probably don't get much income from 'partner' that runs the chargers, lose money as those 6 spaces are not fully utilised. At an event in Sheringham last year, all the car parks were full and there was a parade of cars driving round trying to find spaces, I was happy to find 5 of the 6 EV were available and even though I didn't need to charge I plugged in anyway.

I suspect it is because the car park is run by one company and the chargers are run by another completely separate company so they have no way to cross fund each other (or can't be bothered to organise something between them)

As per Tesla Superchargers Carmarthen, located in an Apcoa Car Park.

Charging your car?
Ooo that will be a minimum of £2.70p Thankyou Very Much.

I suck it up because I have no choice.

Not strictly true.
I can go elsewhere and park for free but each kWh will be 79p

Tela charge me 43p

Today for example I took 54 kWh.

54 X 36 = Another £19.44 -£2.70= £16.74.

Quids in, even with the parking.

(I think I've done that right!)

One thing I can be assured of if I haven't, is that I will soon find out! @siteguru 🤣

I got stung in Devon a couple of months ago, 2 EV charging spaces, one taken, I parked up in the other but the fool next door had plugged their EV into the wrong charger, the one for my space. The cable in their machine wouldn’t reach my vehicle so I turned it round and the cable still didn’t reach so I left, a PCN turned up a couple of weeks ago ugh. I was there 11 minutes faffing & would have paid to park if I’d been able to plug in successfully because that’s cheaper than a PCN! I’ve appealed it so we shall see what happens.

Well technically you didn't park or charge so you should be able to appeal ok.

Private parking companies issue invoices. Rarely do they go to court to recover money from an unpaid invoice.

Court claims are quite numerous actually, but only a very small percentage of unpaid PCNs proceed to a court claim ... this just shows how many PCNs are issued every year - millions.

Robustly-defended claims mostly end in the Claimant discontinuing ... it's a numbers game to them.
