When plugging my iPhone XR into a USB lead for Apple CarPlay I noticed it was charging the phone as expected. The phone was also sitting on the charging mat. It seemed to charge to 100% fairly quickly, which concerned me. Question :-- can the iPhone accept charging from both sources at once?

I have found guidance on the Apple website that says that the phone should first be connected by a Lightning cable then the MagSafe charger, and that the phone will then charge from the cable, but I have an XR phone and uses an earlier version of the induction charging. I quote " It's important to plug into a power source before placing your iPhone on the MagSafe Charger. This allows MagSafe to verify it's safe to deliver maximum power. If you happen to place your iPhone on the MagSafe Charger before plugging into a power source, simply remove your iPhone from the MagSafe Charger, wait three seconds, and then put it back on to resume maximum power delivery."

Is the car inductive charger Qi-certified? ( Qi is an open, universal charging standard created by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC).)

I noticed an odd thing while I was charging the phone on the rear USB socket. It didn't function as a carphone through the infotainment screen and speakers - when I phoned someone it was just an ordinary mobile phone call, holding the phone to my ear.

I think only the front USB connects to the hands-free kit built into the car.

However, if I use the phone when I'm in the car when it's not plugged in to anything, it works through the car system. Gave me quite a turn the first time it did it as I wasn't expecting that to happen! But in the same physical position, but plugged into the rear USB, it doesn't.

Perhaps by plugging in, the phone decided to disconnect from the car's bluetooth?

I think it must have been something like that. It works when it's in the car if it's not plugged in to anything, or if it's plugged in to the front USB socket. Just not if it's plugged in to the rear one.

It also works if I'm standing near the car, which is a pain. I was trying to talk to the helpline of a recalcitrant charger one evening, but the phone insisted on having the conversation using the car speakers and mike, while I was bent over the charger screen behind the tailgate peering at a screen I could barely see for the low evening sun.

In those situations, you should absolutely turn off the phone's bluetooth connection.

Not something I have ever had to do. I couldn't even see the phone's screen without burrowing into the boot out of the sun. Fortunately the friend who was with me went out and read the stuff on the charger screen for me, and relayed it to me while I sat in the car and took the call.

I was just so thrown by the fact that a phone call I had dialled while standing behind the car wasn't coming through the phone itself! I'll know what to do if it happens again, thanks.

I've had that once when my (previous) car was in for an MOT at Kwikfit ... my car was on the ramp at the far end of the workshop (with the ignition on) whilst I was in the reception area - someone called me and it rang in the car! (It made the "technician" jump when it happened). ?

I had a suspected incident when I tried to call someone from my bedroom when I was in my friend's house, and although I thought the call had been answered, nobody replied. The car was parked in the drive quite nearby. But the car was locked at the time and we couldn't replicate it, so I think it was a false alarm.

The C port does have power, but not to USB C specifications. (i.e. USB C memory sticks should work in it)
My Trophy is in the garage being looked at for 'no USB C' power. They've tried about 5 different cables and 10 different phones. Some charge, some do not.

Anyone else tried or had issues with the USB C poer (USB 2 below)

re the USB c port - my iphone 14 isnt supported via the car for carplay on the USB c - Yet the car does support the normal USB port - Is that your issue or have you tried a usb c stick drive for media play and thats not worked ?
No it's purely power at this point

I am confused. Siteguru has said that the usb-c socket supplies power but not at the design specification. Thus it is logical that some phones will work and some not dependent on the charging circuitry. That is, can they charge at low current levels where higher levels may cause the supply voltage to drop and shut the link down. Usb sticks don't require much current and they appear to work.

So is it a fault that the usb-c can't charge phones or is it not designed to do so? Both sockets will give 5v under no-load conditions but the loaded voltages can be different.
