Plug-in grant slashed and eligibility criteria changed

The Government has cut the plug-in car and van grant rates and changed the eligibility criteria.

If the dealer had started a grant application, then the grant is locked in at the £2500 level.

"... any orders placed by customers between 12.01am on December 8 and 11.59pm on December 14, before the grants rate changed that had not yet been logged on the portal, will be paid at previous rates and eligibility criteria."

Presumably orders placed prior to the 8th are also on the old rules. I thought my dealer told me that if I put on the refundable deposit (back in Sept) it wouldn't protect against grant rises.

So. The grant is now for cars 32k and under and only £1500, unless you've already got an order placed which I have. The finance not being added yet isn't an issue. Also, the MG5 LR Exclusive in metallic paint retails for £32,040.... The salesman suggested it might be taking a £45 price cut!

The addition of paint colour doesn't make it fall foul of the grant level. It only matters if the optional extra effects the vehicle's range or performance.

An actual order, not an 'I'm interested', I might order next week.

My order states list of over £33k before grant so this would now not be eligible for any grant. Glad I made my order back in November

I strongly suspect that MG and other brands where their cars are close to £35k will drop the price to make cars eligible.
Two things here. Killing the grand for PHEVs is a good thing in my opinion. I don't like them as they contain the complexity of an ICE and EV combined. Plus it will hit Toyota who I don't like.
And reducing the grant will encourage brands to make cheaper EVs. Maybe. And we need cheaper EVs.

"Petrol Ped" of Youtube fame, has just finished testing the original ZS EV for a month.
I was surprised ( given some of the expensive cars that he has tested ) that is response for the ZS EV was pretty positive.
He has just handed the ZS EV back and collected a new Toyota Rav 4 PHEV to test for another month.
The price of this car was £47,000 BEFORE the recent reduction in the grant !.
Why would you pay this amount of money for a car that has a very small EV range and is not economical on longer trips due to the extra weight it is lugging around ?.
It has a 2.0 litre engine, so I would expect the fuel economy to be pretty poor.
Service cost's as the car ages are going to increase because you are serving two masters.
The serving demands of a ICE car, combined with any demands of a EV !.
Even though EV are more expensive than it's ICE counter part, you could buy a nice EV for almost £50,000 ????.

Just taken delivery of an MG5 EV LR in red this morning, traded in a 3yr+ old Leaf. Got sick of it telling me how to drive and slamming on the brakes due to it deciding a vehicle in the adjacent lane way presumably going to jump across into my lane. Full £2500 grant applied

Given that one of the recommendations to improve fuel economy is to not carry stuff in your boot that you don't need because of the weight what about the battery you are lugging around because it is flat? The key benefit for me with an EV due to its battery range is being able to choose which day this week I am going to charge the car. We have a 3.6 KW solar panel array which can top up our car for free (I have the wall box throttled to 3 KW). The new car means I can now wait even longer for some sunny days to keep the running costs down. With only around 30 miles range in PHEVs typically if I don't top up today I would probably have to tomorrow irrespective of the weather.
