Public balancing

Well that's as it should be, balancing doesn't take long.

My monthly routine is to Fast Charge up to 97%.

Then plug into a 7kW charger conveniently situated near the pub I'm having lunch in.

By the time I come out circa 1 hour and 30 minutes later, the car had reached 100% and done a balance.

I sat in the car the first time I balanced it and after reaching 100% I was sat for about another 30 minutes before it stopped.

Perhaps yours is already well balanced?

I can only assume that the public charge point is looking at charge rate, and once it falls below a set level it believes that no further charging is required - presumably to encourage users to not hog the point.

Or ... is it as per above and balancing has actually happened but you just didn't realise?

Ok thanks, so the fact it was left plugged in for probably about 30 mins over when it would have got to 100% means it may have done it then?

The thing is that I don't know what stopped the charging, the car or the charger.

I'm no expert but I believe a slow 7kw charge is controlled and charged by the car whereas a CCS fast charge is controlled by the charger itself (i.e. not the car). So I would presume if you left it for 30 mins on a 7kw it should have balanced. No doubt someone will correct me if I'm wrong !! 😉

You can do some ballpark man maths to see if it has done a balance.

On a 60kWh battery every 10% is 6kW

So if you charge from 80% to 100% you would expect to add 20% or 12kW

If the charger says it has supplied 15kW (or something different to 12kW) then there must have been some balancing (or some serious losses in the cable used).

On a 7kW+ AC charger expect efficiency of about 90%, so for 12kWh into the battery about 13.3kWh will have been delivered. Balancing charge might be up to 200W or so, but only for about 30 minutes so actual charge delivered during that time will only be about 100Wh or 0.1kWh. :)
