Hi all. On verge of buying an MV5 61.1kWh. 38000 miles. 2022 21 plate.

Battery charged to 100%, car says range 195 miles. Is that bad?
Thanks for any input.

Seems a little low to me . My 22 plate has never shown less than 200 miles at 100% charged . Of course colder weather makes a difference and how the car has been driven . I would ask them to check the SOH and the service history before pulling the trigger . If the car hasn't been serviced the battery warranty will out the window

Thanks Maskull. Really appreciate you taking the time to reply.
What is the SOH please? And what servicing is required? Do you have to take them to an MG dealer for servicing for continued validity of the warranty?
Thanks again, ian.

SOH is the State of Health of the HV battery . For instance mine is at 99% after 3 years so it's lost about 2 miles of range .
It is preferable to have it serviced at the MG dealer though I think you can use other credited dealers. For one thing MG will renew your breakdown cover after every service

This will either be because it doesn't expect to use the full 61.1kWh of the battery (degradation), or because the assumed efficiency is low. The latter is much more likely. It could be because people have been ragging it to test it out and doing so in cold weather.

As long as it is the efficiency that is reporting low (and that is because of driving style/conditions) then all is ok.

If it is an MG garage perhaps you could ask for a degradation report, but in general it is hard to do damage to a battery that size in that few miles. There are examples with 150k which are fine.

Thanks for input. Do you think it is worth it to have a 'capacity check' at MG for £140?

I suppose it depends on how much the car is costing you plus you could also verify the service history. Personally I wouldn't touch with a barge pole without a service history 😊
No, i understand the need to scrutinise the service history. Can you tell me what form it takes please? Is there a service book with it all laid out, or is it some nebulous online only type thing?
Thanks for your time and effort. Very much appreciated.

Maybe not.

If you can get service data from MG then it should have recorded the degradation each year.

Are you able to take it for a test drive? If so, see if you can do a full reset beforehand so as to get a more accurate range figure.

I can understand the trepidation as with an EV you are mostly buying a big battery, but unless you are very unlucky it will be fine.

There may be documentation hard copy as I have from the dealer . Or the dealer should be able to access records from the VIN number of the car . I say should because they couldn't when I bought mine . Mine was 11 months old and I just took a chance and immediately booked it in to the dealer . What's the mileage on the one you're looking at and price if I may ask ?

MG and EV batteries in general are turning out to be far more reliable and long lasting than the press would have us believe. The low range could as others have said be down to the last few drives (the figure will change with your driving style). Also temperature has a big effect on range, if it's cold or the battery is cold the range estimate decreases. EG if the temperature is below 10c I tend to get under 200 miles range.

38000miles £12.3k. 2022 on a 21 plate. just over 3 years old.

My 2023 mg5 trophy... with gentle driving... but heated seats, demist aircon, lights on etc.. colder weather, 80% charge, the guessometer will say about 175 miles. That's jumped back to over 200 now it's a bit warmer.

Absolutely not! You can buy an ODB2 reader for £15 or £20 and the free version of Car Scanner will tell you the SOH.
I think the OP may need a recommendation for an OBD2 reader that works with the MG5 .Not all do from the posts I've seen ;)

Is that standard or long range ?

Maximum advertised range for trophy (or long range) at 100% is 250. At 80% it's about 210 / 220 for me
Your gom is possibly very optimistic... or you have an amazing style and get huge miles/ kWh.

Quick and simple method that does not involve any cost or scanners and can be done at the dealers is to simply reset the accumulated trip meter.
At 100% SOC (state of charge) this should show the WLTP range (250 for a LR) on the GOM (guess-o-meter). At any other percentage say 80% then it would show 250*80/100 =200.
Anything less than these figures represent the degradation, some should be expected, in SOH (state of health) of the HV traction battery (the big battery).
