Hi
Didn't want to spend £200 odd pounds on a MG roof rack , just interested if anyone has any other type ( none MG ) on their car

On the MG GS/HS facebook page someone has posted that Lidl have got roof rack bars that fit for £29.99 on sale from 6th May.

Hi g4rth thanks for the reply , but those fit the GS model ( has a space between the roof rails and the car roof) but will not fit the HS , where there is no gap.
I may have found a set , so will purchase them and put my results on here to help others who may wish to have some
John

Did you sorted it? I’m interested as well

I went with Thule EvoWingbars for my ‘21 plate mg5 Exclusive but they are around the £200 mark. My thought process was I didn’t want cheap noisy bars that caught the wind too much - had them on other cars and the noise and drag is noticeable - given range in an EV is an important consideration, opted for a decent set this time.

I was told that there is a limited weight that you can put on the fitted roof rails on the MG5 as they are only decorative, what's you experience since buying your bars?

My understanding is they can take a total combined weight of up to 75kg. So I do limit what I load in but I suspect that’s the same for most roof rails to be honest. Certainly you need to take care not to overload because it affects handling and cornering for obvious reasons.
I’ve a Thule roof box and have used it loaded for a full month with ladders too on occasion and no problem at all with them coping.

Its not so much the weight but the sideways momentum exerted by the load when taking turns and in a crash situation which limits what you can put on the roof. The roof can pretty much support the weight of the car when overturned. Roof tents have a load limit of 150kg while stationary.

Agreed, it is important to make sure anything in the roof box is secured and can’t move around otherwise it can shift when driving and upset the safe handling of the car too.
