As I impatiently await delivery of my PHEV I have been reading the vehicle manual to give myself a head start when it finally arrives, and I note that there is a recommended running-in period of 900 miles during which time you should limit your speed and revs. These requirements seem to relate to the ICE but as I am expecting to do a lot of my mileage in EV mode I am wondering how I will know when the ICE has clocked up the 900 miles. So my question to existing owners is did you
a) wait for 900 total miles on the odometer and call it done
b) make an educated guess as to the proportion of your EV/ICE mileage
c) discover a genius way to find your ICE mileage
d) ignore it/didn’t realise you were supposed to do it

Hi
The way I worked this on my car was to keep to the instructions when the ICE was running until I had done around 1500 miles as I was running in a lot of EV mode in the summer. I did keep in Auto mode for a few weeks so the ICE would run, and once warmed it runs smoothly now.

My VAG 1.4TSI has done 24k in 6 years, that equates to 4K a year, if I do half the HS mileage on ICE then that works out at 2 k year so I need to run it in for 6 months or more! (n)

Thinks.....
Its an automatic so revs are governed by the loud pedal, as long as speed is kept within legal limits then there is only the acceleration that can/could put additional load on the ICE, so just normal driving should not cause any problems. I have not had to 'Run in' an ICE for years!! Just treat 'em nice.

I went with B. Although the owners handbook says keep the speed variable when running in but I did a couple of motorway runs so the mileage went quickly but I did drive at constant speed. Yes the 900 ICE miles still took twice as long on a standard ICE car to reach because of running in EV a lot of time.

I read the recommendation about 900 miles running-in whilst having a coffee just after arriving in the Vendee, two days after picking the car up in the UK. Suffice to say the return leg was driven more sedately than the outward journey. It seems OK ....

the first drive home was 220 miles and I stuck to 50-65 mph. It was a combination of M6 / M1 / M25 and lot of road works and traffic helped. I mostly tend to drive under 70mph unless I am late. As long as you dont abuse it, you are fine. In winter with cabin heating it will use ICE a fair bit and its not the smoothest starting on ICE - gear changes in ICE only are slow.
