From our podcast 8th July 2024 where we discuss rusty brake discs, causes and solutions.

3. RUSTY BRAKE DISCS

Brake discs
First Service ... Excessive Corrosion of the rear Disc found
First edition MGZSEV 1st MOT

PROBLEM: Due to lack of use, because of regenerative braking, any EV can end up with rusted and scoured brake discs that provide poor braking and may require premature replacement.

CAUSES: There is one main cause:
a) Running a high regen all the time - this means that the brakes are rarely used (particularly the rear brakes) and so over time the discs can rust and become damaged.

FIXES:
a) Regularly do hard braking from high speeds with regen off, so that you give the brakes a workout.
b) Clean the discs yourself.

DISCUSSION POINTS:
  • It is normal for brake discs to have a light surface rust when the weather has been wet, we are not talking about this, but rather the damage that can occur over a long period of time if the discs are not cleaned-up.
