I have sung the praises of Octopus for more years than I care to remember but now I'm leaving.

Tomato Energy, I hadnt heard of them but they came up during a search for a business energy supplier. Their business deal blew all of the others out of the water by quite some margin. I was intrigued and looked further into this company to supply me at home and their tariff is amazing.

tomatotariff.PNG

5p kWh from 00:00:00 to 06:00
5p to 23.155p on a straight line from 06:00:00 to 09:30
40.8155p standing charge.
No restrictions on EV or Wallbox etc, straight forward time based schedule.
No restriction on Peak/Off Peak Ratio.

Looking at these figures on my spreadsheet I will save over £400 per year over Octopus Intelligent.

There's no referral options like with Octopus so if youre interested, pop along to the website.

Sorry for the Ignorance, but will you still export to octopus or switch over to Tomato?

I dont know if Octopus will have my export, I'm awaiting a reply from them, Tomato dont do export yet but I have found another company that pays up to 40p for export dependent on grid demand etc. I'm clarifying a few points with them.

My graph on the same tariff looks nothing like yours. A quick 'back of the fag packet' calculation says I would save £81pa in import but potentially loose £218 on export.

I hope it works for you but I think I'll pass.

Do you think this is an introductory offer and later entrants won't be able to get such a good deal?
I have absolutely no idea, but there's no hassle in changing supplier and it's easy to leave them too if better deals are available. It literally took less than 5 minutes to change over.

Why would you lose £218 on export? Surely you can sell it somewhere?

£218 is the difference between the Octopus 15p rate on IOG and their SEG rate if you are export only.
Basically, given how little we use, the potential Savings are not enough to counter the hassle of changing.
What has Tomato told you about winter saving sessions?

I've only been with Octopus for just over three months. Before then I had literally not changed my electricity supplier since they privatised it. So it's a bit soon for me to be thinking of changing again! I think I'll let the pioneers start the price war and see where it goes.

You obviously must do a LOT of export!

Thats no problem but just as an aside, there isnt any hassle changing, all online, less than 5 minutes, job done.

Nothing at all yet but again, it's not a significant amount we earned from that.

I have no beef with that but the time being a customer isnt really relevant, loyalty counts for nothing these days and you dont have any exit fees with Octopus (or Tomato for that matter).

I'm not trying to get people to change only making you aware of this seemingly excellent tariff.

Yes, I see it looks good. I'm not doing customer loyalty here, I'm doing "get used to how the system works and once that's done, think about changing other things." I've barely got the system set up to function on the Octopus tariffs without wanting to start mucking around with it again!

Hi John and thanks for bringing this to our attention. I've never heard of them before, so did a bit of digging around. Mostly positive reviews on Trustpilot. A mention on moneysavingexpert.com said that their smart meter wasn't showing the correct rates and Tomato Energy were slow to respond. I have had other suppliers who do not show the correct rates, but the monthly bills were correct.

Just today I contacted Eon and told them I was signing up for their Next Drive V3 fixed for 12 months. However, Tomato Energy blow them out of the water, and I already get everything done in 6 hours off peak when I have 7 hours to play with. So I've signed up with them this afternoon after reading this thread and doing the research. I think it will be useful to compare notes on our experience with them. What do you think?

Alan.

I've phoned them twice with questions and the call was answered in less than a minute. Time will tell if it's a good move.

I'd happy to keep a thread going of the Tomato experience, my changeover for Home is on 1st September and for my Business is 28th October.

I'll start a thread off on the changeover.

Hi @johnb80

When signing up did you have to enter or agree to an 'Agreed Usage' as s5.5 of the t&c's state

In the event that You exceed the Agreed Usage at any Nominated Electricity Supply Point, You shall pay to Us any costs (including but not limited to additional use of system charges), losses or expenses incurred by Us for the provision of, and as a
result of, that excess.

I did look at the t&c's but there was no mention of an "Agreed Usage" in the signing up process for the "Lifestyle" tariff. I presumed it was for one of the other tariff's they offer.

There was no agreed usage figure anywhere in the contract. They did access my meter data and have seen my 99% off peak and they don't have a problem with that at all.

The T&C's are the same for the business tariff I have with them, on that our KVa rating is stated at 1230 kVa, which is far too big for us anyway, we're a computer retail store. I dont think this part of T&C will be an issue for domestic use.
