Sleeping in MG4 [merged thread]

But seriously, even though I didn't use my midgie head-net, my head isn't the problem. My legs and feet are the main problem. Socks - or even better stockings - made of the same stuff as the head-nets would seem like a product the market is crying out for.

It's ironic that the bit of me that's suffering worst is the bit that was most covered up. I was wearing socks and tight-fitting jeans all day. But they seem to be able to get through tight-fitting clothes, and I have never really understood how. Best to wear loose clothes they say, but there are hardly any guarantees even then.

Now you see the thinking behind the design and production of the stockings worn during a holiday in Scotland by Nora Batty.

I have designated a spot in the car for the Bite-Away wand, and it is not going to go anywhere but its designated spot. I have Smidge, some Jungle Formula left, midgie-net, and I need to get more anti-histamine cream. I'm looking at about four almost empty tubes that seem to have an expiry date some time in 2021, so that might need fixing.

I just realised that the Wester Ross coast hasn't been getting the chilly nights we've been getting 800 feet up in the Border hills. (No midges to speak of seen here this afternoon.) A frost usually does the trick, but there hasn't been one yet. Why do they think this isn't midge season?

I’m getting a mental picture of one of those Mexican guys in the old films with the belts loaded with ammo and the wide brimmed midge sombrero. Meanwhile cut to Midge Central Command somewhere near Achnasheen where the wee devils are holding Midge Forcast staff hostage with an outsized can of Shuman ….”are you feeling lucky MacPunk? “

You have seen the wide-brimmed mosquito hat then? I got it for South America, but I see they sell them in Craigdon Mountain Sports too. Frankly I think the mesh is too wide to keep midges out. I have been a lot of places (including places you need a Yellow Fever vaccine to go to) and never anywhere that got me bitten as much or as badly as in my own back yard.

The fly head nets they have in Iceland have quite wide mesh and a midge wouldn't even have to fold its wings to get in. I think I'll go back to Iceland instead. Lovely country.

0ch you had me dreaming about the fish finger cabinet.

I worked over at Kishorn for a few years, played football at loch Carron, if you looked from a distance you would have seen 22 guys (including the goalkeepers) running round in circles waving their hands in the air, it was a midge massacre.
Safely inside one evening we watched a new arrival going out to his car, lifting the bonnet, and that's as far as he got before they attacked....Oh how we laughed as he scarperred inside, the bonnet stayed open until the next morning.
Had to use a net when fishing as even with repellent the little b*****s get into your eyes, then you rub your eye with your hand and viola, I can confirm that repellent and midge eye mix can reduce you to a quivering wreck.
I have tried various repellents, deet makes me ill, but skin so soft really works well for me.

I thought about trying to put a single inflatable mattress in the mg4 when I get it for the odd stealth camp. Problem is how stealthy is a bright orange car

What are you being stealthy from? You saw my pics. I was in a car park. Nobody was bothered. A couple came and pitched tents and slept in these on the second night. It's not an issue in the countryside at least. (It's not easy not to be noticed in a bright blue car either.)

I like to go camping on Dartmoor but would like back up option of if weather got too bad could camp in car.

The car parks there say no camping in cars and don’t know if anyone goes round checking as don’t want to drive home at silly am if they do
