SOC Health 40%-80%

There seem to be some confusions here:

- SOC = State Of Charge, ie the current percentage level of the HIgh Voltage battery, as displayed either on the driver's screen or the battery/charging infotainment view. This obviously varies between 0-100% depending on how you use or charge the car.

- SOH = State Of Health, ie the condition of the HV battery pack. This is not readable in the car displays and requires a dealer visit to measure (or other diagnostic equipment). This should be close to 100% for a LR car, 95% is normal for SR and will slowly drop over years as the car ages, and the battery capacity reduces a but.

- Battery Health Mode = the maximum % the car will charge up to, for LR cars the recommendation is to stay between 10-80% (sometimes 20-80% is given) for best long term battery life, using 80-100% SOC for longer trips only, plus once a month to help the battery calibrate. BHM is irrelevant for SR cars as they can always be charged to 100%.
well explained

@David1978 could you share the version of your car system ?
because for me this % limiter does not appear in the car infotainment, only in the app with the schedule charge, but it does not respect and every charge at 100% if i do not stop before.
The SR has a different battery chemistry to the LR so it won't come to any harm if charged to 100% and left fully charged. Where as the LR battery doesn't like being left at 100% charge which is why the schedule charge won't stop at 80% for the SR.

My system is R59. I'm going to ask my dealer to check my query out. I don't understand why battery health mode should read 40-80 rather than 20-80

If you talking about the indicator in the car on the battery screen, I think it always shows that region as 40-80 - this isn't a measurement of the battery, just an indicated region on the scale.

There is an argument that for maximum battery life you should not discharge it too low (as well as not charge it too high), which might be why it is shown as 40-80 rather than 20-80, but it may just be an inconsistency.

Staying above 40% doesn't seem to make any significant practical difference in the real world. Battery packs already last longer than ICE engines and are likely to live beyond the car with as second life as stationary storage.

Yes, if you baby your battery you can probably measure the difference years later but it really not a concern for almost everyone.

I doubt your dealer knows more about it than us on the forum.
To me this looks like a simple visual cue to give you some guidance when charging.
Maybe they had 3 designs, and this one got the most votes. I don’t know.
But it’s not impacting the functionality of your car.

@David1978 interestingly you mention you have R59.
Can you share what CarPlay looks like? Do you still have the bar at the top? Can you pull down the menu from the centre while in CarPlay? Can you go to the HVAC quick settings while in CarPlay? What does it look like?
With pictures (or video) please ???

David1978, I'm pretty sure there's some confusion here between the following two concepts. Firstly, what you're looking at is the charge limit slider. The lowest the charge can be limited to is (and has always been, AFAIK) 40%. Secondly, it is recommended to keep the battery between 20-80%.

Now the range on the car's charge screen only covers the possible positions of the slider. As tsedge said, you could argue that this is an inconsistency, and I'd agree. But if you remember that it was 20-80% on this screen, I'm quite convinced your brain is playing tricks on you here, mixing in the other memory/knowledge.

As for MG's reasoning, I would speculate that if they extended the BHM bar to 20%, others might complain that you can't set 20%. And what would be the point of charging the car to 20%? As soon as you move it, you're out of the recommended range.
