I still don't have the car but reading the manual I am confused about the procedure to charge the MG4, particularly about the need to lock car - charge - unlock car.
Can I be inside the car with the air-conditioning on while charging?

Can anybody give me a step by step guide (for dummies)?

Many thanks?

I've had my car for a year now and have never switched it off to charge.

I had a Tesla Model 3 before this and just carried on my routine with the MG4.

I know what the manual says, but its up to you.

This is my Tesla Supercharger routine (other chargers are available and will be slightly different)

Reverse up to charger.
Plug the car in.
Select the post I am on in the app.
Start the charge.

Now I can either lock the car, wander off and get a coffee or stay in the car, AC on (if required) and wait.

Numerous threads posted, but this one of the most recent. Using the search function will provide you with a lot of info.

What is the right way to charge? Car on or off?

This is the part of the Manual about fast charging (residential?). 1 says "Ensure the vehicle is power [powered] OFF".

I do exactly the same. Getting it to stop is another story though. I tend to try the app, try the car, and untimately do lock and unlock from the car a few times to get it unlocked. No idea how to stop properly so it's unlocked.

Thankyou.

That is residential.
Why would you want to be sat at home with the AC on?

I rarely want it to stop as I always charge to 100%
But If I do need to get away, I tell the Tesla App to stop charging.
That's always worked for me.

(Cue someone telling me it's bad for my battery to always charge to 100% )

If your going to leave it charging in a public place, lock it.
If you want to sit inside unlock it.
You can change from unlocked to locked while charging without a problem.
But if you unlock it while charging, it stops charging, sometimes mine will come back on after a delay, but mostly I have to start the whole sequence again.

I get best results, If I lock it first, to turn the system off, then unlock it to plug in.

It also seems it should be plugged into the charger first, then the car.

The only problem that I am having with the rapid (particularly Tesla) chargers is that by the time I have been to the loo and got my coffee, the bloomin thing is good to go and I have to get back to the car :(

I've never experienced this myself. It's normal for me to start unlocked, lock, go and get a drink, come back and unlock and sit in the car until done

I never power the car off manually.

At home, my procedure is:
  • Jump out of the car (with everything still running).
  • Open the charge port
  • Plug in
  • Lock the car

At a rapid charger, my procedure is basically the same:
  • Jump out (all running)
  • Open charge port
  • Plug in
  • Start the charge

Then I either:
  • Sit in the car (all running)
  • Lock the car and wander off
OR some combination of the two: lock, come back, sit in the car, lock again and come back etc...

I repeat, I NEVER shutdown the car using the power off mode. It isn't required.
