The great big insurance rip off

My renewal from RAC insurance came through, almost double with a £200 increase on last year. Shopped around and managed to get this down quite a lot. Paid £331 in total, which is £60 increase from last year. Seems most insurers wanted £450+ to insure myself and the wife, ridiculous!

Try USwitch, gave me the best prices, and ended up with Allianz at £330. Mine was £268 last year.

Try Saga, we are on £320, but the best bit is that the price is fixed for 3 years as long as nothing changes.

The cheapest quote I could get on my 2022 Trophy Long Range was £598 fully comp, license for 23 years, no points or accidents and 14 years no claims. Seems excessive coming from £295 to insure my BMW 120d!

Aviva came out at £829

I tried them, they came out as one of the most expensive for me over £770.

I switched to Flow last year because they were the lowest .They're now Allianz , so I'm crossing my fingers

Got a quote from LV for renewal (2 cars) up by £250 from last year. Went on site and re-pplied as new customer and is £200 cheaper (only difference I can see is additional online discount). LV undertake not to do this so I guess they are just as bad as other companies. Hasting direct was cheapest by about £50.00.

I thought the regulators had told them to stop penalising existing customers so that new and existing customers get the same quote.

I’m with Hastings too. It’s proper bare bones insurance though. I didn’t even get windscreen cover!

Eventually I got a quote for £2086.05 from Admiral which I have reluctantly accepted. The moral seems to be try for the Peter Pan approach, ageing is inevitable - but should it be so expensive?

Really sorry to hear this. There's a lot of ageism around for over 80s - travel insurance can be extremely expensive and hard to get too - and this does not seem to be fair.

Hi billdunstew it was with disappointment and then anger after reading about the insurance cost for the MG5 which today will be worth around £12-15000 you might well be 86 but I shall assume with many years of driving experience behind you. it is very annoying what todays insurance companies are doing and the excuses they give to do it.
Insurance cost as increased across the board in general as we all know but your quotes are ridiculous to be quite honest in my opinion and I sympathise with you greatly.

I also wonder if you go on as a second driver and change the primary cover person. Not sure what effect that would have.

An 86 yo adding a 56yo family member would get a reduction legally. Changing the lead driver could be illegal unless they actually are the lead driver. He could then have a 2nd driver on longer trips.

Agreed. Changing the lead driver to someone who isn't actually going to be the lead driver is known as Fronting. It usually happens more at the other end of the scale (parent fronting for teenage son as premiums are scary high), but the same applies here.
