Hi all
I am about to replace the front tyres and I have assumed we need to have a 96 load rating.

However on the forum I have noticed some people looking at tyres with a lower rating, down to 92.

What do people think can we use a lower load rating as the car isn’t terribly heavy?

Looking for advice as always :)
Thinking Khumos currently

Hi, do the 92's have XL or Extra load written on them?

No my understanding is that only the 96’s are rated as extra load.

96= 710 kg at top vehicle speed

92 = 630 kg at top speed

The MG dealership put 92H tyres on the front of mine before I bought it. So it should be OK.

Although if you are a law abiding driver, the speed rating is never going to be tested to the limit. If what is stated in a post earlier, about the load rating also being at least partly related to speed, then perhaps the 96 rating is also excessive.

If you search for suitable tyres on Black Circles or Tyreshopper, they will suggest tyres from 92H to 96V rating. I think they'd be skating on thin ice if the recommendations were dangerous.

True I guess

I can’t imagine the tyre getting anywhere near its load rating.

I do wonder though if there is a recommended manufacturer weight if this could be used to invalidate insurance in a crash, cos insurers are so reasonable …sigh

I went for Michelin e primacy in the end
Very very expensive but has a good rep for longevity

There is a plate on the inside edge of the driver's door. If you use tyres other than those specified, you're at risk of your insurance not paying out in the event of a serious accident, especially if it's caused by a tyre blowout.

And it says you can use 92V or 96V.

H rating is 130mph. The car won't go that fast, so it won't be unsafe or invalidate your insurance.

That may be correct in relation to speeds, but it's irrelevant in relation to your car insurance as it is a modification away from the manufacturer's approved specification and would need to be declared. Feel free to check with your underwriter, they'll definitely be doing a thorough inspection of your car if you have an expensive collision.

I'm currently looking at a Trophy to buy & it has Maxxis tyres rated at 91v, they appear to be original to the car. Not sure how to check what they should be.
It'll be on a card on the inner edge of one of the doors if it's a UK model, normally the drivers door. It's also in the manual, which is probably available online. Most tyre shops won't fit tyres outside of those rated for your car, if they notice.

Very strange if it's got the wrong tyres, I have seen another on auto trader with the same, I've been scanning the adverts to check! It's only done 17k, wouldn't think they've all been replaced.

If you're comparing with the other ratings above, they're probably talking about pre-facelift models and I think the wheels have changed quite a bit on the Trophy as part of the face-lift.
