Tyre load rating

The primacys I got are 96h so not v rated on a pfl car.

My insurer doesn’t care as they said it’s not a modification and I could not see a reason that they wouldn’t be ok, rated to 130 mph rather than 149 mph.

Sadly the e primacys are not available in v speed rating.

Some insurers won't care, but you'll find plenty of posts online from people with insurers that do care, such as this one. As long as you have it in writing from them that it's OK, you're winning.

Keep in mind that manufacturers are very unlikely to over spec on tyres, as it costs them millions more across all of their cars. The "speed" rating also covers other aspects of the tyre, such as maximum acceleration and deceleration. I suspect the acceleration and deceleration are the reason they used a V rating, rather than a much cheaper H rating.

Electric vehicles tend to be a fair bit heavier than petrol/diesel equivalents due to the batteries. Check this article.

My MG5 came supplied with tyres that were not extra load rated. When it came to replacing fronts tyre garage mentioned that they should have been rated as extra load. It turned out that the tyres were Australia/Asia market ones.

The MG5 is in the same weight bracket as BMW 3 series cars, do they need heavy load tyres ?

The required weight rating is on the door jamb, (see post #20 for a MG5 Trophy) no mention of extra load??
If your previous tyres were within that spec then you paid extra for something you didn’t need I’m afraid.

No mention of XL in the spec for the pre-facelift (inc. heavier 61kWh battery) either, so they don't seem to be necessary. Although my pre-facelift car did come with factory fitted XL rated tyres, so they probably aren't a complete waste of money either.
