MG4 Trophy LR
Hi,

I bought a slightly used MG4 Trophy (72 number plate) back in January, I have been having problems using the USB C charging port. I was told by the dealership that this is due to me having an Iphone 15 pro and they draw too much power. Has anyone else had this issues?

Thanks

I don't know about "drawing too much power" but the USB-C port only delivers very limited power. I don't use it. I have changed to USB A and converter in cigarette lighter plug.

What problems? Charging or using it as a music source? You must use a high speed lead (which I assume a USB-C lead is).
Others have reported on this forum about the low power output of the USB-C socket. If you are charging, I would use the cigarette lighter with a USB-A adaptor, as webhiker wrote, or try the back USB-A socket, which may give the highest power of the USB ports.

My MG4-EV LongRange Trophy has same problem! USB-C port doesn't work. Tried different cables, it doesn't recognise my iPhone for CarPlay and don't charge. Seems like it is dead port.

USB-C is for charging only. No data.
When saying "charging", don't get too optimistic (modern phones probably won't benefit too much, just saying)

USB-C port does work for data (e.g. music or video files on a pendrive), but it doesn't work for AA/CP. I agree though that the charging capacity of the port is minimal - many newer phones won't charge from it, especially if the screen is on.

My bad. I'm not that old-school 😎

I wonder why MG does not document this limitation for customers, what's the point of providing a USB-C port when it can't support data and doesn't charge an iPhone!

Just to be clear. MG does state in the manual that the USB-C port is for charging only. And it does work! "Just" ridiculously poorly LOL

Yes, just checked the manual and it says:

----------------------------------------
The front power socket is located in the front of the centre console. When the vehicle is powered on, it can be used as a power supply.

There are 2 USB ports (1 & 2) equipped both sides of the 12V front console power socket. The USB ports can provide a 5V voltage when serving as a power outlet, or realize data transmission. USB port 1 can also provide ‘Vehicle-Mobile Phone Interconnection’ function.

Note: The voltage of the front console power socket is 12 volt, and the power rating is 120 watt. Do Not use electrical equipment with the power exceeding the rating.

Power Socket: Extended use of the accessory power socket and USB socket when the vehicle power system is switched off will cause premature discharging of the vehicle battery.
--------------------------------------

---> Coming back to the point it was better to provide a 2nd USB-A port as at least it useful, why bother providing a useless USB-C port if it can't charge latest phones and can't do data!

I fully agree to the last point, but that's only a semantic argument. What is, is!

Yes it can! Just not Android Auto/Apple CarPlay data. ;)

I use a wireless AA/CP dongle in the USB A port, and have a 12V socket adapter to provide power to my phone ... best of both worlds. :)

Agree. I have a 12V socket adapter happily providing 100W when I work remotely from my car.
