I finally managed to see a volcano orange MG4 Trophy at my local dealership, and was surprised to see that it is a flat paint colour, not metallic or pearlised. The white and blue colours are also non-metallic so why is there a price hike of £695 pounds for the non metallic orange over the cost of non-metallic white or blue? The grey, black and red are all metallics and/or pearlised, to justify their price premium, so what's the story with orange? Has anyone else who ordered an orange car any views on this? Orange may well be exclusive to the trophy but is that exclusivity enough to justify a £696 premium or do you feel you are being ripped off?

Is the colour worth the extra to you? If not, don’t buy that colour. I like the colour and was happy to pay the extra for it. Others won’t like the colour and won’t be happy to pay extra for it. Simples, as the meerkat would say.

IIRC, I think it was either Mercedes or Audi started charging extra for flat white a couple of years back, once it became a popular colour.

Fair enough. Having seen orange ZS cars, which were as I recall metallic orange, I kind of assumed that the volcano orange would be the same, hence the increased costs. As Crawfyp correctly observed, if you like it you'll pay for it.

As an owner of a Tango, I can assure you that the hue of the colour changes dependant on the environment.

I am very happy with my choice. And ‘Choice’ is the operative word. If you think it is not worth £700, don’t pay it, for goodness sake.

And no, i do not feel ripped off!!! Blooming heck!!! Are you bored??

Apologies for offending the volcano orange community. I ordered one shortly after the launch announcement and was just a bit surprised it was a"flat" colour when I saw it in the metal for the first time, given that it's the most expensive paint option. Peace and love from a soon to be flat orange owner.

I don’t think anyone was offended. My wife calls my car colour “Trump Tan”. Now that’s offensive.

You're most likely correct with the allegation. However, they aren't the first manufacturer to do something like that and won't be the last. If a colour is popular/expected to be popular, common sense to charge for it. Look at Hyundai, when the i20 N as released the (solid) Polar White colour was the 'free' option. However, given it looked half decent on the car, and people were ordering it in this colour, they changed the 'free' colour to Brass, which I presume hardly anyone paid for (when it was a costed option)..and made Polar White a £300 option instead.
Like other posters have said, if one don't want to pay for the orange, they don't have to via not selecting that colour on their car.

The orange (like the red) is a tri-coat paint. Both are the same cost adder. All the others are bi-coat ... with the metallic then the top coat is metallised.

Primer
Base coat
Mid coat (tri-coat paint only)
Top coat (metallised for metallic)
Varnish/Lacquer

Are MG playing on the fact it was a “special“ colour back in the day with the MG TF?

Now that was a volcano, with coolant spewing out of the coolant filler cap when it overheated. ;) :)
Oh god. I loved the colour but hated that K Series engine in it. Caused no end of trouble no matter the vehicle it was in (saw too many K Series' while working as a mechanic after leaving school)

K series was absolutely fine for first 20,000 miles. Secret was to change your car often.
