Hello and welcome to the enthusiast's forum for discussing the MG HS PHEV 2020-2024.
The MG HS was launched by SAIC Motor under the MG brand in China in 2018 as a compact SUV, replacing the MG GS in many markets. The petrol-only versions initially spread to markets such as the UK, Europe, Australia, and Southeast Asia during 2019.
Recognising the global push for electrification, MG introduced the MG HS Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) version in Thailand in late 2019 under the name MG HS PHEV. It combined a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor, offering around 32 miles (51 km) of pure electric range (WLTP) thanks to its 16.6 kWh battery.
The MG HS Plug-in Hybrid arrived in the UK in 2020, marketed as the MG HS Plug-in Hybrid. Australia also received it in early 2021, badged simply as the MG HS +EV.
The HS PHEV was praised for its value for money, spacious interior, and generous standard equipment, though it was sometimes criticised for its relatively short electric range and modest performance compared to some rivals.
2025 Replacement
In early 2025, MG replaced the HS range with an all-new model called the MG7 in China and its international equivalent, the MG VS Hybrid in some markets. However, for Europe, Australia, and the UK, MG introduced the new-generation HS, sometimes referred to internally as the MG Pilot during its development. The new HS brought sharper styling, improved interior technology, more efficient hybrid powertrains (offering both mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants), and significantly upgraded electric-only range and performance to keep pace with newer rivals like the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson hybrids.
The new model underlined MG’s continuing global growth, with plans for expanded availability across Europe, the Middle East, and Australasia.
