What happens below battery 5%?

What if... I run below 5%... Even 1%...

Does it have a "reserve" like gas cars?

Or once it goes below 3% it may fluke and drops 0% suddently and shut down?

I have 95 km left, and need to go and come back to a place that is 37 km... So thats 74 km... Leaving me lower than 11km left and sometimes that number is not even exact.

Any ideas on this? Whats the lowest you have gone? What happens then?

Yeah but mg4 is not the same as tesla... Ive seen some videos comparing and the "km left" is not precise - usually lower than what it shows and speeds down faster than it predicts. So its not trustworthy

Ah, but Tesla Bjorn AKA Bjorn Nyland review lots of (if not all) EV's and does range tests to see what happens when the run out of puff. He carries a charger in the back to get him going again. Well worth watching his videos on the MG4 IMHO.

That is not what I've said!
The youtubers name is Tesla Bjørn. He have tested loads of vehicles, amongst them MG4 in both Norway and Thailand.

There is no set reserve when reaching “empty” like with ICE cars, and it probably isn’t great for battery health either to completely discharge to the point the car dies. But I think @siteguru holds the record for going down to 2%?

How Low Can You Go .... (SoC)

It's GOM calibration and balance time, so I ran the car down low and left it for a couple of hours before starting to charge. This was a photo I took immediately before starting the charge: Anyone else gone lower? :) PS - I checked the SOH with Car Scanner and it said 92.66%. I'll check...

Keep the mode set to normal for the most accurate range estimation, and when your range drops more than you want drive at a slower speed. It is by far the most effective way to increase your range.

It is also possible for the car to go into limp mode, a little symbol of a turtle will appear on the dash and limit the power output of the car, but some people never get this even with a low state of charge.

I don't understand. Why would you ever let it get that low anyway. I never let my old hybrid get below quarter of a tank and I never let my 4 get below 20% . Just charge it to suit your journeys. Even if you get a surprise journey you can always rapid charge .

I don't understand. Why would you ever let it get that low anyway. I never let my old hybrid get below quarter of a tank and I never let my 4 get below 20% . Just charge it to suit your journeys. Even if you get a surprise journey you can always rapid charge .

Also they live in Ecuador which I believe has fewer public chargers.

I've had mine below 4% a couple of times and I didn't even get the turtle symbol. The car went right on behaving normally, while flashing up displays that it would really really like some juice quite soon, OK?

There's a video somewhere of a bunch of guys in the Phillipines (I think) who arranged to drive a 51 kwh Trophy-spec car till it died. They were having a blast filming it. Being in a hot climate they got a very long way, and I think there was a pretty reasonable buffer at the end of it all. The video is linked in another thread.

There's no fast charges here..and no MG specific public charges (there's public charges but for KIA only - its lame)

And i do plan my trips but sometimes unexpected trips shows up screwing up my initial plan - so there's that.

I had 95km left and came to my destination on ECO mode with AC off. The km to arrive here said i would arrive with 57km left... In fact i arrived with 65km left.

Eco is not precise but at least its "worst case scenario" meaning i can save more kms by going smooth.

Now i have 72 km left and my home is 40km away - i use google maps a lot.

I always charge before it drops to 20% up to 80%. But today unexpected occured

Thanks, I've pondered this question myself, now I know the answer, it will keep going for a few miles on a 'flat' battery, but it's best not to do it.

Yep. I do the equalisation charge from about 9% to 100% every so often.

I have an MG ZS Trophy and have had it for over a year, I had 13miles left on the dashboard when it went into "Limp Mode" and dropped the speed to 8mph, I had a BMW i3s and had it down to 4-mile range without it doing this, I was only 1/3 of a mile from my house, so I had my neighbours witnessing me delaying everybody behind me,
Do you know if this setting is configurable?
I have been told that if I had stopped the car and then restarted it, the message would have disappeared, and the car would have at least been moving at a reasonable speed.
Any thoughts? ( Other than taking the P... )

I let my X Power, drop to 5% once. And have to say, was slightly worried. Won't be doing it again. I tend to charge it, when it drops to 20% ish. And mostly back up to 100%

Am I right in thinking that it's not necessary on the SE LR version because of different battery chemistry...or am I making that up?

The SE LR has an NMC battery the same as the Trophy and X-Power.

The low battery level to 100% in one charge is applicable to both battery types because it informs the Battery Management System so that more accurate battery statuses can be given.
