OK, so after a few different attempts, and two different wireless adapters, I think I’ve got wireless CarPlay working as well as it can in my Trophy.
The adapter I’m using is a CarLinkit 4.0, model CPC200-CP2A
Connected to car using instructions provided - connect Bluetooth, connect to Wi-Fi, check update etc.
Once all up and running, I’ve set the values on the adapter Home Screen (192.168.50.2) as shown in the attached files.
Now, I’ve found that leaving it set up like this, the connection is random, and slow - I think there are Wi-Fi conflicts which cause problems.
So I tried forgetting the adapter Wi-Fi network on my phone, forcing the adapter to connect to car via Bluetooth.
This (so far - 3 days and counting) seems to be reliable, and pretty quick to connect. All CarPlay functions work well, and screen is responsive, CarPlay info is also shown on small drivers screen - of course, things may be different in your car ….. but this might work for you.

My setup is late ‘23 reg Trophy (the updated model with rear wiper and 18” wheels) running R40 entertainment, using Genuine CarLinkit 4.0, iPhone 13 on iOS 17.4.1

Hope this helps

I've just tried this workaround, seems to work in my car as well (same as yours)
I went through the CarLinkit setup and I don't have a "knob mode"! I'd checked the software/firmware version is the latest.

Thanks, I was just about to give up on it!

Digging around a bit more and it seems that ‘knob mode’ only applies to Android Auto, not Apple CarPlay, so you’re not missing anything useful.

Still having a blank screen issue as detailed here: Carlinkit issue

CarPlay works once the screen is on by pressing a steering wheel button, the phone button or voice activation. However, pressing the CarPlay icon from the car’s main display brings up a blank screen. If I’ve been using CarPlay, switch to the car’s home page then try the car icon again to access it, the CarPlay screen appears very briefly then the screen goes blank. CarPlay is working though as swiping the screen or stabbing the point where the dashboard icon would be brings it back instantly.

I’ve tried the settings as detailed above and the problem persists. A minor problem but irritating.

It was turning on the ‘background’ tab that fixed mine. You might try toggling this and/or the ‘sync mode’

Thanks but I’ve already tried toggling those two in all combinations. I’ve probably spent several hours trying all sorts of different setting combinations before posting on here.

I was hoping someone had the exact issue I am describing and had a definite fix. Beginning to think it is just a quirk of my car/carlink unit!

Thanks again for trying to help.

Sorry but why would you need the Carlink kit if the car has apple Carplay standard with a cable?

One of the common causes of an unstable connection is forgetting to remove the original Bluetooth connection with your phone . The Head unit then gets confused and tries to connect to your phone direct instead of the Carlinkit Bluetooth. .

Oh I see, I’m having problems with my hands free mic both Bluetooth and cable. Both are very low volume when driving about 50 and the recipient can’t hear me due to background noise of the road? Do you have these problems as well?

Hi Lesterp,

Is it working with Carlinkit 5.0 too as well? I am not sure, as I want to buy one.

Update: so after initially having great success with the Carplay link thingy, it's now being a pain. I generally have to unplug/plug in the adapter to get it to connect.
I tried it in our Ford Transit base motor home and it worked straight away?

Search engines love these forum threads, and therefore, for current and future readers and references, I will make this entry in my way in trying to help the reader out in their quest of trying to troubleshoot Android Auto, MG4, Bluetooth and WiFi.

This following setup is utilized in multiple cars operated by me at the moment. Including MG4, MG ZS EV, Renault Trafic, Volvo XC60, Volvo V90. The method and theory is solid.

Software
Entertainment System version
SWI68-29958-1300R46

Hardware setup
MG4 and Carlinkit 5.0 (2air). The CarLinkit is connected to the MG4 visa usb-c.

Software issues
The operating system running the Entertainment System of the MG4 is Android Open Source Project (AOSP). But, the knowledge regarding wireless networking that the "MG developers" have shown is rudimentary, at best.
- MG developers have left MAC address randomization ENABLED by default.

This means that the car changes is Bluetooth identify at random times (at startup). And this will make you frustrated, because you will have to "connect" your phone to your car again, and again, and again. I usually have ten to fifteen different Bluetooth identities, that are in fact my car only, on my phone.

Networking and know-how
Phone - Bluetooth - WiFi - Android Auto
No magic. Just networking.

The connection between the phone and CarLinkit is established in this chronological order;

1. The phone connects to the CarLinkit via Bluetooth (standard default Bluetooth device connection, nothing funny here)

2. CarLinkit now executes "the WiFi trick" by creating a WiFi 5G network. Carlinkit then sends the new network credentials to my phone, and also tells my phone to connect to the established WiFi 5G network.

3. The phone is now connected to the CarLinkit network, and thereby also to the CarLinkit device, over WiFi 5G and Android Auto is working as normal, though wirelessly.

Hope this helps someone

Using these as a guide (plus changing the start delay to 20 sec) I’ve had success too with a CarLinkit 5.0 2air…

…with one exception: When CarPlay is playing music, with the infotainment unit at the Home Screen it always says “Unknown/Unknown” for the track and artist, and often a Play button even though already playing.

Anyone else seeing that? The dodgy documentation makes me think the CarLinkit “Sync” setting is relevant, but makes no difference with it on or off.

Edit: Since posting this, I toggled Sync on & off again and now it is showing the title/artist albeit still with no artwork. Wonder if that setting will stick though...

Ah, much better ? A couple of pointers (at least ones I can replicate with my particular iPhone/CarPlay setup):
  • “Sync” stops the MG Home Screen play/pause button functioning
  • “High Speed Mode” causes frequent blank screen CarPlay problem
  • “Transfer Mode” seems to be specific to Android .. but I’m not game to change it while everything’s working ok
It also appears to prefer CarPlay being left in Dashboard mode (i.e. the screen that shows Map, Music and Siri Suggestions side by side) for the MG Home Screen to display the media info correctly.
