Hi all,

Hope this post is okay. I've had an MG4 SE for a month now with now 650 miles on the ODO, i left my car on charge overnight at my workplace, like I do most shifts but when i got in the car to leave work yesterday i drove about 5 miles before an amber "Vehicle Control System fault" appeared on the dash.

The car drives perfectly fine but I've found out tonight that it doesn't want to charge, it connects then immediately aborts charging. I have no battery faults on the dash. Ive tried both a CCS super fast charger at a petrol station and my usual type 2 charger plugged into a podpoint bank at our work (what i use most the time) both go through the confirmation process then abort the charging...

Has anyone had a similar issue? Are they related? What was the issue in the end?

Any help is greatly appreciated 🙏

With it being so close to Christmas I'm worried I'm gonna lose all my planned festivites due to my car being with MG for weeks on end...

Might be some ideas to try in here.

Car cutting out.
Ive tried disconnecting the 12V battery for 30 mins but fault didn't clear. Powering down and rebooting also doesn't work. Tried to charge while locked, charge while unlocked, tried manually pressing start charge - none of them get it to charge. My final hope is my granny cable when I get home. Other than that I'm on 68% battery with 100 miles left 😥

It needs diagnosis at the dealer. The sooner the better although at this time of year it will be hard to get it in so if possible:
  • Go to your dealer with the car
  • Explain the problem in person, telling them how crucial the car is for you.
  • Plead with them to at least diagnose it for you before xmas.

I have found MG dealerships will be flexible in person but not through the national booking phone lines.

Can you just drive there and speak to them or do you have to book an appointment or something?

You certainly can just drive there and turn up (check their service desk opening hours, may not be open at weekends).

Being there in person makes it harder for them to say "no". You may still need to go back and forth to get a "yes", be polite but firmly insistent and don't blame them for the problem.

They may not be able to do it on the spot, but hopefully they can book you in asap.

Okay thank you, this is so helpful🙂, one thing i need to ask, its a lease car through my workplace, i believe the dealership that delivered it was Greenhous but we also have a MG dealership in my town. Would i be taking it to Greenhous or MG?

You can take it to any MG dealer, the warranty applies nationwide. And if one dealer can't accommodate you, you can try another.

Your lease documents may nominate a dealer as first point of contact, worth checking (or asking at your workplace).

I just found a helpline to call for the leasing company, I will phone them and see what they advise. Thank you for your help

As it affects both types of charging, my first port of call would be the area around the socket on the car. Check the condition of all the pins and for any debris down the holes.

The weight of the cable has caused disconnections for some people, and the suggested advice is to try holding the cable in the socket at slightly different angles while someone else tries to initiate the charge.

No joy unfortunately

Yes, I had exactly the same fault after charging at a PodPoint 7.2kW home charger. At first, the car wouldn't go, but after a while it relented. Worrying, because I had a 70 mile journey ahead of me in the dark. It got me home, but the "Vehicle Control System Fault" and others kept coming and going throughout the journey. I disconnected the 12V battery negative terminal and left it overnight. After reconnecting, a stream of faults were reported, but slowly cleared. It took a slow drive to clear the last two. The car has behaved itself ever since.

You should also turn the steering wheel lock to lock a couple of times to recalibrate the steering sensors before driving a couple of miles to clear the other faults. Your electric window limit sensors will also need resetting by holding the switch open/close for 10 seconds when they are fully open and closed.
