Would an MG5 be a good fit for me?

Hi everyone,

I'm coming to the end of the PCP for my (71 reg) Dacia Sandero, which is the bi-fuel model. This really helps me keep costs down, as I do around 18k miles a year for my job. Sadly, it's getting much harder to get hold LPG where I live (and the price has doubled in three years) Also, I was quoted £550 for the 3rd service today, that's the final nail in the coffin!

Also the current model I have has gone up by £4000 in three years, so I doubt I'd be able to buy another one (and keep the monthly payments under £200 per month)

I have been thinking about a three year old electric MG5 estate. I'm just a bit worried about doing lots of miles with a 2nd hand EV car. Are these solid buys?

I've also heard that sourcing parts for the MG5 is a bit difficult. Is this true? Is the servicing expensive?

And has anyone found fitted home chargers for a good price? I'm with Octopus if that makes any difference.

A lot higher than what?

When I changed from a 12 year old Fabia, to the MG5, my premium rose from about £200 to £350 but the MG was worth about 10 times more, at the time, so no real surprise. I just renewed the MG5 and the premium was about £60 more, again not unexpected, in view of insurance costs rising all round.

The point of the video is that Cleevely have had to do virtually nothing, beyond the minor service requirements of an EV, and rotating the wheels.

I have had my MG5 Sr Excite for 3+ years and done 53k no real issues just the radio locks up

The majority of owners (me included) are very happy with the MG5 as it ‘does what it says on the tin’, but unfortunately many who ran into problems with the car reported poor (probably an understatement) dealer diagnostic capability, spare part availability and MG support in general.

It was rated 4th in the driver power ev reliability survey. If you look through this forum the number of faults over the years has been pretty minor with only a few taking the car off the road.
The Hyundai and other forums seem to have a lot more standard faults. MG5 seems to mostly have niggles and annoyances (apart from the Tesla charging thing)
I haven’t had mine long and I really really like it.

That's comforting, thanks. The reason for the worry is if my car is off the road I don't earn. And buying an EV car without warranty does panic me a bit, but funds are low, so I need to get creative! ?

This is the sort of thing I was looking at.....

You get the balance of the 7 year warranty, as long as the previous owner(s) have kept up the service schedule. So there won't be an MG5 with no warranty, unless it's done over 80k miles. The exception is taxis, where the warranty is severely curtailed. Make sure you get a report on the car before buying.

The chances of the car developing a major fault may be low, but if it does (and the risk increases with age) it’s almost guaranteed to be off the road for a long time even within the warranty period.

It may be the same for other EV brands but MG’s after sale support simply isn’t something you can rely on.

Check the service history, it’s quite possible it’s still has its warranty which would help.

The warranties are 7 years of 80 thousand miles so it could have three years left to cover all the major stuff.

If doing lots of miles then I would go for the long range, 61.1kWh. The advert you linked to was for a standard range. Your choice obviously but the longer range might mean you have to charge less on expensive chargers away from home.

I recently changed from a 68 plate Dacia Logan to a 72 plate facelift MG5. With 11 months still to run on my insurance, the extra cost was £45 + £15 amendment fee.

What's your daily mileage? The standard range model listed there can do upwards of 200miles on a charge in Summer. If your trips are longer then you just need to factor in a charging stop at some point every day.
I drove the standard range 75k miles in two years of driving and never had a problem getting there and back again. It's down to planning initially, but if you cover a known area you will come to know the best places to get a charge when needed.
When I had a fault it took a loooong time to get fixed but due to misdiagnosing by the technicians not lack of parts. At that point I had done about 60k and battery soh was 98%

That car got remodelled by a truck so I now drive a pre FL long range. I have to say I really do appreciate the extra 50 miles range despite what I said above.
